We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rita Liu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rita, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
In today’s society, stress and pressure have become the norm. Learning how to handle them and maintain a work-life balance is crucial.
Having worked as a freelancer for six years before joining our agency, I believe that sticking to a regular work schedule is the key to achieving work-life balance and reducing stress. Additionally, spending time in nature helps me build resilience, and I engage in physical activity regularly, especially since I spend most of my day working on a computer. Visiting places like the beach or forest helps me build resilience.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’ve been working as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator for the past 7 years. Recently, my partner and I decided to start our own agency, Lemon Vision, during the pandemic. Our agency name was inspired by William Bernbach’s famous print ad for Volkswagen called Lemon, which we both love. At Lemon Vision, we don’t take the easy path. We believe in customizing unique design solutions based on our clients’ needs. Our motto is “Don’t Let The Perfect Be The Enemy Of The Good.”
As the creative lead, my responsibilities include everything from building brand identities to directing content creation. Our agency has a particular passion for lifestyle brands, and we specialize in bringing international brands to the US market with our multicultural backgrounds. We take pride in our work, and our goal is to help our clients succeed by offering creative solutions that stand out from the crowd.I was a freelance graphic designer/ illustrator for the past 7 years. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Let me enchant you with some whimsical advice for those embarking on their creative journey. Picture this: You have a voice, a magical spark that sets you apart. When you weave stories for your clients or even work on your own projects, remember that your personality truly captivates you. People don’t fall in love with bland business, oh no. The charm and charisma will make their hearts flutter like a flock of butterflies.
But wait, there’s more! As you navigate this mystical realm of creativity, expand your gaze. See beyond the borders of a single project and step into your client’s shoes. Immerse yourself in their world, and treat their dreams as your own. Ah, the wonders you will uncover when you think from their perspective! It’s like finding hidden treasures in a secret garden.
Now, let me share a little secret with you. The key to unlocking the true enchantment of your work lies in one simple word – passion. Be passionate, dear one, about the life that surrounds you in every twinkling moment. Let the world ignite your soul and breathe life into your creations. And trust me, oh trust me, that passion will weave its way into your work, shimmering like a starlit tapestry.
So, as you embark on your creative expedition, remember these whimsical words. Let your voice dance, your perspective expand, and your passion ignites like a shooting star. And as you journey through this magical land, may your work be a testament to the world’s wonders, shining bright and casting spells of joy to all who encounter it.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
As a designer, paying attention to the most minor details is vital to our craft. But just as important is the ability to step back and gain a broader perspective, to see the entire image unfold before our eyes.
By shifting our position and seeing things from the client’s point of view, we gain valuable insights into their needs and desires. It’s like exchanging roles in a grand dance, where we momentarily become observers and understand what they seek from our creative expertise. This shift in perspective allows us to align our vision with theirs and create designs that truly resonate with their goals.
And you’re absolutely right, dear friend. This journey of understanding and adapting goes beyond professional growth. It extends into the realm of personal growth as well. Learning to actively listen to others, both clients and colleagues, allows us to expand our horizons, develop empathy, and cultivate a deeper understanding of their needs. This not only strengthens our professional relationships but also enriches our own lives.
So, as we dance along the path of design and life, let us remember the importance of attention to detail and the power of stepping back to gain a broader perspective. Let us embrace the opportunity to switch positions, walk in our clients’ shoes, and truly listen to their needs. In doing so, we contribute to their success and embark upon a transformative journey that nurtures personal growth.
May your design endeavors be infused with the magic of both attention to detail and a broad perspective. May this newfound wisdom enhance your interactions, sparking joy and growth.
