Meet Ron Long

We were lucky to catch up with Ron Long recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Ron with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
At Broken Step Studio, our work ethic is deeply rooted in the passion and dedication of the talented individuals who collaborate within these walls. The foundation of our work ethic is built upon the musicians, engineers, producers, and other professionals who enter with a shared commitment to craft and creativity. Their tireless pursuit of excellence drives the energy within, pushing everyone to put in the hours necessary to refine their skills and bring their artistic visions to life.

Moreover, our work ethic is also influenced by the legacy of musical icons who have influenced the artists. The echoes of legendary artists and their groundbreaking albums reverberate through these spaces, reminding all who enter of the transformative power of hard work and innovation. This connection to the past inspires a sense of responsibility and a desire to uphold the studio’s reputation for delivering top-notch productions.

Lastly, our work ethic is cultivated by seamlessly integrating cutting-edge technology and time-honored techniques. The constant evolution of recording methods and equipment requires adaptability and continuous learning from all involved. This commitment to staying at the forefront of the industry fuels a culture of hard work, as everyone understands that innovation and growth demand unwavering effort. Ultimately, our work ethic stems from a harmonious blend of artistic devotion, historical reverence, and technological advancement, all working together to create an environment where the pursuit of musical excellence is paramount.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Broken Step Studio is a creative haven where music takes on a life of its own. Our studio is dedicated to the art of music recording, production, and collaboration, providing a nurturing environment for musicians, bands, and artists to bring their musical visions to reality. What sets Broken Step Studio apart is the fusion of state-of-the-art technology with a warm, welcoming atmosphere that fosters creativity and innovation.

What’s most exciting and special about our studio is the deep sense of community that thrives within its walls. Musicians find themselves not just in a recording space, but in a place where ideas are exchanged freely, talents are honed collectively, and friendships are forged. Our team of experienced engineers and producers are not just experts in their craft, but passionate advocates for the artists they work with. This dynamic creates an environment where each project is treated as a unique artistic journey, resulting in recordings that capture the essence and emotion of the music.

Nestled in the tranquil landscapes of rural West Bunnell, Florida, we offer a unique advantage to artists seeking a peaceful and inspiring recording environment. The studio’s location amidst the serene beauty of nature provides a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life, allowing musicians to immerse themselves fully in the creative process. The open spaces and fresh air not only rejuvenate the mind but also infuse a sense of calm that enhances artistic exploration.

One of the most remarkable features of our location is the ability to record late into the night without the constraints of urban noise. The quietude of the surrounding area ensures that musicians can capture their performances with utmost clarity, harnessing the energy of the nocturnal hours to cultivate an ambiance that’s both intimate and captivating. This freedom to work without time restrictions allows artists to fully embrace their creative flow and craft music that resonates deeply with their emotions and intentions. In essence, the rural setting of Broken Step Studio in West Bunnell, Florida, transforms the recording experience into a harmonious journey where nature and music harmonize seamlessly.

At Broken Step Studio, we’re proud to be involved in several new projects with local original bands. Currently, we’re working with the indie-rock band “J and the 9s” to craft an album that marries their introspective lyricism with layered instrumental arrangements. The alternative folk solo “Smells Like a Sailor” is also bringing his ethereal sound to life in our studio, blending acoustic textures with haunting vocal harmonies. These projects, and countless others, embody the heart and soul of Broken Step Studio – a space where diversity and creativity converge to create music that resonates deeply with both artists and audiences alike.

Adding to the vibrant tapestry of creativity at Broken Step Studio, we’re thrilled to introduce new, captivating video podcasts that offer unique insights into the world of music and beyond. “Bloop” focuses on literary passions, inviting viewers to join a captivating book club podcast where the hosts, guests, and authors discuss literature that has inspired their craft. The pages come alive when Bloop explores storytelling, enriching listeners with multifaceted perspectives.

“Into the Sound” lifts the veil on the creative process by delving deep into the hearts and minds of bands and artists. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on our journey operating a music and video recording studio, three qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge stand out as pivotal to our success. First and foremost, adaptability proved to be a cornerstone. The creative landscape is ever-evolving, and being open to embracing new technologies, genres, and trends allows us to stay relevant and provide our clients with the best possible experience. Our advice to those starting their journey is to cultivate a mindset of continuous learning and adaptability. Embrace change, be curious about emerging tools and techniques, and never stop seeking ways to evolve your craft.

Secondly, communication skills have been instrumental in fostering strong relationships with our clients, team members, and collaborators. The ability to listen attentively, convey ideas effectively, and understand the artistic visions of others has not only enriched our projects but also cultivated a sense of trust and collaboration. As newcomers begin their own journeys, we urge them to hone their communication skills. Engage in active listening, ask questions to clarify expectations, and learn to provide constructive feedback. A studio is not just about the technology; it’s about creating a harmonious environment where creativity flourishes through clear and meaningful interactions.

Lastly, business acumen has played a significant role in our studio’s growth. Understanding the financial aspects, project management, and marketing strategies inherent to the industry allowed us to sustain and expand our studio. To those at the beginning of their path, we recommend taking time to learn about the business side of music and video production. Whether it’s budgeting for a project, negotiating contracts, or building a brand presence, a solid grasp of business principles will empower you to navigate the industry’s challenges and capitalize on its opportunities. Remember, a successful studio not only produces great content but also operates as a viable business entity.

In essence, adaptability, communication skills, and business acumen have been our guiding lights on this journey. Aspiring studio owners and creators should embrace these qualities and skills, for they are the compass that will guide them through the ever-changing and inspiring world of music and video recording.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
