We recently connected with Bea Robinson and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Bea with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I am a natural! Being in the beauty industry for so long made me realize that a lot of professionals will do the job looking into the money involved and not the final results on the client’s face. That is a big mistake because my clients are walking billboards out there and word of mouth is still the best form of advertise. I don’t touch a face if I am not 100% sure that I can deliver the results accordingly.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have been in the permanent makeup business for 23 years and a lot changed since then. It all started in Brazil in 2000, I was one of 3 technicians in town and my schedule was always full. I started teaching/training in 2006 but something was still missing: I felt that I needed more training in order to contribute to the community. I came to America for the first time in 2008 to have medical tattooing training so I could help people who lost their areolas due to breast cancer. I could also help people born with cliff lips, victims from domestic violence (burns) or accidents. That step gave purpose to my carreer. I can say now that I helped over 400 patients as total or partial probono jobs and it definitely makes my heart happy. I moved to USA in 2011 and started my journey here keeping in mind the same purpose as when living in Brazil: I wanted to make a difference! 12 years later I was awarded 9 times, was the only craft master in Tennessee to speak in a worldwide conference, I also launched my own line of needle cartridges and topical anesthetics. All of that sounded like a distant hard to achieve dream but now I can say, I accomplished it all and I cannot wait for what comes next!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Focus: if you have a goal don’t let other circumstancial events take you out of your focus! Nobody but you will make things happen the way it should be. What I do is magical! I make people feel happy when they look at the mirror and that is priceless! Determination: yes, I was determined to be successful! It needs to sound like a mantra in your life! Obstacles are inevitable and I can tell based in my own experience, it was never easy! I don’t give up, I don’t surrender because my will is greater than the difficulties!
Work Ethics: no, I won’t take my client’s money if I know I won’t be able to make a positive difference. My job was never about the money and will never be. Due to so many doing permanent makeup (many unlicensed) sometimes I have clients coming to me to FIX their faces. It is very sad but it is becoming very frequent: so many unprepared artists botching faces deliberately just for the money! Some clients can be fixed, others can’t, unfortunately I have to decline the ones I don’t see fit.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
The best (and ideal) client is the one who does a lot of research regarding the procedure they want to have done. It is key to check the artist work before booking an appointment! If the work can be seen in person, that is much better! Many of my clients come to my office after seeing a friend, colleage or family member with my work on their faces! Word of mouth sounds overrated but in my opinion is still the most solid way to promote a good job done. The good client also has realistic expectations and don’t expect a photoshopped result. That’s why my pictures are posted on social media without filters or retouchs: real is always better!
