Meet Dr. Babak Azizzadeh

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Babak Azizzadeh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Dr. Babak, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?
I’ve grown to learn that my time with my family and prioritizing my mental health are essential in avoiding burnout in a demanding profession like plastic surgery. I also do my best to eat a balanced diet, stay active, and get enough sleep. I have an extremely supportive family and friend social network that helps keep me grounded.

Seeking support from trusted colleagues and mentors allows me to share experiences and gain perspective while maintaining a strong sense of purpose and passion for my work helps me stay motivated during overwhelming or challenging moments.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a facial plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, and my practice is focused on facelifts, rhinoplasty, facial reanimation, and non-invasive treatments. I’ve been in practice for the past 20 years, and we have been diligently focused on providing cutting-edge treatments, as well as developing novel and safe ways to address the aging process and other facial plastic surgical techniques. My brand is unique because we are involved in developing novel techniques in a boutique way, where we provide hands-on, customized treatments. An important standard of my practice is safety. With facial plastic surgery, patients are often concerned about the safety of going through surgery. With my deep understanding of facial anatomy and nerves, we can provide elegant, authentic, and beautiful results with the highest safety parameters. One upcoming product and service we are expanding is developing a healthcare technology platform to allow improved communication between patients and doctors in the aesthetic field.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I am really passionate about this field. I love what I do. I truly enjoy going to work every single day. That is the utmost important thing because if you are not passionate about what you do, you’ll end up not liking what you do and end up not doing a good job. I am blessed with innate skills that make me a great surgeon. Sometimes, you can learn certain surgical skills, but other times, you have to naturally possess other skills. Especially when it comes to plastic surgery, you need to have an innate artistic ability and a deep understanding of what looks beautiful and what does not. I also work hard. I am really dedicated to my art, science, and surgical pathway. You need to be dedicated to your field to be great at what you do.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
The most important thing is to take a deep breath, meditate, exercise, and spend time with family.
