Meet Destiny Flaherty

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Destiny Flaherty. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Destiny below.

Hi Destiny, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
I believe self-care is incredibly important for sustained impact! Working 24/7, saying yes to every social outing and work responsibility, and trying to stay fit and healthy inevitably leads to burnout.

I’ve learnt to prioritise rest, take on key tasks, and delegate what’s needed. Doing so has helped me make a bigger impact on myself. my team, and the people around me.

I also invest in self-care, where I prioritise actions that fill up my cup, like speaking to a therapist regularly, spending time with friends and family, and have no-phone periods to recover. Obviously a nice manicure is a treat too!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My journey as the co-founder of SAMA has been driven largely by passion-turned-business.

After diving headfirst into the rabbit hole of beauty and skincare ingredient labels, I quickly identified the shortcomings of your run-of-the-mill nail polishes. This newfound insight felt like a call to action. I was determined to design a polish that not only heightened awareness but also presented a purer alternative.

Even though SAMA officially made its mark in 2020, its conception began a few years earlier. I kept stumbling upon nail polishes that simply weren’t up to par – from iffy ingredients to lackluster branding. At the same time, I noticed some big names embracing nail polish as a statement accessory. It got me thinking, “Why not create a fashionable, yet clean polish for all?” With that in mind, I passionately developed a line that’s vegan, plant-based, halal, and all-embracing. To put it simply, SAMA is my love letter to everyone seeking a cleaner, trendier nail polish!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey with SAMA, three core qualities stand out that have undoubtedly shaped my path:

Passion for Authenticity: Without my genuine drive to seek out true, unadulterated products, SAMA would’ve remained a mere thought. My relentless pursuit for what’s real and authentic pushed me to look deeper into the products we use and question the status quo. To those starting out: always be driven by genuine interest. When you’re authentically passionate about something, it shines through in the work you produce.

Adaptability: The beauty industry, much like any other, is in constant flux. My ability to pivot and adapt to new trends, feedback, and challenges was instrumental. If you’re at the beginning of your journey, practice resilience and flexibility. Markets change, trends evolve, and being rigid can be a startup’s downfall. Embrace the winds of change and learn how to sail with them.

Collaborative Learning: I didn’t know everything when I started, and I still don’t. But by being open to learning from others – whether that’s from a team member, a customer’s feedback, or even competitors – I’ve amassed a wealth of knowledge. My advice? Surround yourself with diverse thinkers, remain a perpetual student, and never be too proud to seek mentorship or guidance. Collaborative learning can expedite your growth in ways solo research cannot.

For those just embarking on their journey, remember to fuse your innate qualities with acquired skills. Stay hungry for knowledge, and keep your vision clear. The road might be tough, but the authenticity of your intent combined with adaptability and a willingness to learn will serve as your north star. Good luck!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! At SAMA, collaboration is part of our DNA. We believe that great ideas become revolutionary when fused with diverse perspectives.

We’re particularly keen on partnering with:

Sustainable Suppliers: As we constantly strive for better, eco-friendly solutions, we’re on the lookout for suppliers who share this vision. If you’re in the sustainable packaging or ingredients sectors, we’d love to explore possibilities.

Influencers and Beauty Gurus: Given the nature of our industry, we value the input and reach of beauty influencers, especially those who have a genuine affinity for clean, ethical beauty products.

Local Artisans and Designers: We’re passionate about incorporating art into our brand. If you’re an artist, graphic designer, or have a unique talent that can align with our branding, let’s co-create magic.

Community Builders: As a brand, we’re more than just nail polish. We aim to foster a community around clean beauty. If you’re into event planning, community outreach, or education, there’s a space for you at our table.
