We were lucky to catch up with Vanessa Denise Of Trapness recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Vanessa Denise , appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
I would have to say my self discipline comes from wanting to be remembered! And planning everything out, if I didn’t follow my schedule & calendar I wouldn’t get anything done.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a stylist located out of Austin, TX. I specialize in Ombré locs. I’m best known for gradient ombre’s that have a seem less transition. My work has gained the attention of several brands, magazines, and sponsorships. I have clients flying and driving from all over the world. Something I never imagined almost 6 years ago when I quit my state job to follow my calling.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Stand out. What can you do differently then everyone else that is doing the same thing as you?
2. Find your niche. I’m a strong believer in narrowing down the styles you provide. Why be good at 100 different styles when you can be a amazing at 10!
3. Never give up! Consistency is key! You may not be where you want to be now but everyday you get one step closer!
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I believe on focusing on your strengths and strengths only. As I previously mentioned your strengths help set you apart from everyone else. It’s cool to be well rounded but when it comes to focusing on your strengths your able to become a specialist. Focusing on your strengths also helps you to niche down. If I know that knotless braids aren’t my strongest point but I excel in locs. I would rather solely focus on my loc installs that show 100% of my talent. Rather then knotless that only show 20% of my talent.
