Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joey Cool. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Joey , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from a couple of different places, but my grandfather, Bill Johnson is probably the main one. He was singing in nightclubs and lounges back in the day. He had to overcome the worst due to the state of our country at the time. He never gave up on it. Music is something he was married to. And that’s why he’s still singing with me on stages to this very day.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
An artist from Kansas City. I say artist because I use music like a paint brush. The feelings I exude are usually strong because they’re genuine. I’ve been singing/rapping since I can remember, but professionally I’ve been at it for about 9, going on 10 years now. I love my family, my friends, and my career more than anything in the universe. I’m blessed to be able to do what I do. Glory to God, of course.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I played basketball for about 12-13 years before I made the decision to pursue a music career. It helped me in understanding what a team can do for you if everyone buys in and is on the same page at all times.
Also, I read a lot. I’ve been that way for as long as I can remember. I used to sit at the dinner table with a book in my hand and a fork in the other. I was writing poems and created a series of short stories called, “Space Intruders” AND won an all school spelling bee by the time I was just 7 years old. So words and literature have always been a huge part of my entire being. Keeps my mind sharp and expands my knowledge, which in turn helps the writing.
This all ties in with studying obviously, right? I found that studying my craft was a great way to learn about it. Just like your favorite subject in school, the more you study, the more you’ll know about it. In the beginning, a lot of it will be trial & error but that doesn’t mean you’re failing. It just means you’re finding better ways to accomplish the goal.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was:
1) raising me in an environment where they knew I would receive a good education.
2) showing me that I could literally do whatever I wanted to as long as I stayed true to it.
3) building a better life than for their children than they had.
