We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alan Z a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alan, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from perseverance and paying attention to the Law of Attraction. The road to success in the entertainment industry has been a long journey, one that is filled with broken promises, rejection, and discrimination. From music to acting, I’ve dealt with so much since I started on this path as a teenager, but my persistence and resilience has allowed me to continue hitting milestones, leveling up and cementing my name in history.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an actor, musician, and writer. My music has been featured on Netflix, HBO Max, and The CW. And I have worked with well-known entertainers like Ronny Chieng, Dante Basco, AJ Rafael, Ruby Ibarra, and more.
I’m currently in post-production for a film that I wrote, starred in, and co-directed called “Porcelain”: a romantic drama that is a homage to the song of the same title by Tonedeff. You can find my music on Spotify and Apple Music by searching Alan Z – for first time listeners, I recommend songs like “Not Adjacent” and “Pull Up”.
I also have a couple festival performance dates coming up, so I will have new merch for the occasion as well.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Networking: Knowing how to connect with likeminded people and businesses, and filtering out the BS 2. Consistency: It’s easy to get burned out, so it’s imperative to push yourself to stay on the path and work towards your goal. Giving up is easy, but pushing through takes courage and immense strength.
3. Practice: Work on your craft until you get as close to perfect as possible.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Take a step back and find peace within yourself before diving back into your work and “the grind”. Being burned out or anxious can be common, so it’s important to center ourselves and take on tasks when we are mentally and emotionally capable of doing so.
