We were lucky to catch up with Angelique Myrick recently and have shared our conversation below.
Angelique, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Hello everyone, I would love to share my story with you, and thank you so much to the people of “Bold Journey” for this opportunity to express my thoughts and intentions.
My family is the source of my resilience. Dedication to their work and community was essential for my family. They loved and supported each other unconditionally, and these values continue to shape our family today. These bonds they created have helped our family weather storms. My grandfather served as the Mayor of his hometown, demonstrating remarkable courage during World War II. Instead of cooperating with the occupying forces, he risked his own life to aid those in distress. He went into hiding and actively participated in the resistance movement. His actions exemplify true resilience, as he understood the imperative of doing what was necessary.
In their communities, My parents were like pillars. They gave back by volunteering and helping others. They participated in various initiatives, lent a helping hand to those in need, and stood up for their beliefs.
Thinking about my family reminds me of the values they passed down. I want to be dedicated to my work and care for my family and community as they did. Their stories inspire me to carry on their legacy in my personal and professional life and how I contribute to the world around me. I wholeheartedly dedicate myself to charitable endeavors, including contributions, fundraising, and engaging in philanthropic and humanitarian efforts with various organizations. My focus is supporting education and raising funds for organizations such as WeSpark Cancer Support Center. This organization holds a special place in my heart and helped me when my father and husband had their diagnoses and treatments.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Sure thing, I was born and raised in Holland, and as a kid, I wanted to be a vet because I loved animals. But as I got older, I became interested in caring for people, especially in the beauty industry, specifically hairstyling. So, I decided to make a career out of it. I learned from great teachers and even worked at a hair salon in high school when I was 15. Another significant driving force was my desire to be independent and earn money.
After high school, I went to college and studied business, healthcare, and hairstyling, which is a unique combination.
With the support of my loved ones, I started my salon when I was 22. I ran my salon in Holland from 1996 to 2003. During those years, I learned a lot about business skills and customer service. It was hard work, but I loved every minute of it!
In 2010, I started a salon at my home in Los Angeles, intending to create a friendly space in this diverse city. I wanted my clients to feel like they were visiting a trusted neighbor while getting stylish haircuts or hair color. There’s no more enjoyable way to unwind, chill during an appointment, and savor a delightful cup of coffee or tea.
My clients often love having one of our cats on their laps. Their names are Mike, Benjamin, and Lily. Their sweetness and purrs work very therapeutically.
Running my salon from home lets me find that ideal balance between my career and being a mom. It also allows me to be there for my friends and family whenever they need me. Plus, it lets me get involved in our community and impact its development and happiness.
I created the brand “Los Angelique” about ten years ago. It represents the wide range of services I offer, from haircuts to makeup and skincare products based on what my clients want.
When asked what sets me apart, I find it hard to answer.
It’s not because I lack individuality; instead, it’s the profound understanding that our shared humanity unites us all. I enjoy connecting with people from all walks of life.
People have described me as reliable, grounded, and respectful of people’s time, which I value and strive to provide to everyone who comes to “Los Angelique.”
As my entrepreneurial journey evolves, I have envisioned an exciting and transformative addition to my existing hair salon. As a salon owner specializing in hair and makeup services, I am thrilled to share my plans to create a one-stop beauty destination by adding a dedicated space for an Esthetician. This expansion will allow us to offer a comprehensive range of services, including facials and beauty treatments, ensuring that our clients can experience a complete transformation all under one roof. Stay tuned, folks!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Thinking about my journey, Moving to a new country was a decision that filled me with excitement and worry at the same time. A new country can offer new opportunities; however, I couldn’t ignore the daunting challenges ahead. Leaving behind the comfort and familiarity of my homeland was emotionally taxing. My friends and family had been my support. And the thought of being thousands of miles away from them was unsettling. My qualifications and experience sometimes translated differently, and I grappled with the reality of starting from scratch in my chosen field. I don’t have the word ‘quit’ in my DNA, and I do not take no for an answer. Today, I rebuilt my community and client base.
What I value tremendously is the following:
Kindness, Compassion, Empathy, Respect, Equality, and Freedom.
1. Kindness and Compassion: Small acts like helping someone or smiling can remind us that we’re all connected. Compassion is the driving force behind acts of kindness and understanding. When compassion guides our efforts, we become people of positive change, spreading warmth and hope to those most in need.
2. Empathy and Respect: Empathy is the ability to step into another’s shoes and understand their emotions, experiences, and viewpoints. It acts as a bridge between individuals, fostering deeper connections and fortifying community bonds. On a personal note, I often feel someone’s energy and become very sensitive to the other person’s needs.
Being polite and understanding to others helps us get along with people who may be different from us. We can have valuable conversations and build strong connections when we respect and truly listen to one another.
3. Freedom and Equality:. Freedom means expressing our thoughts and ideas without fear, but we should also use it responsibly and not hurt others. Everyone should have the same rights and chances, regardless of their origins. Equality is something I’m genuinely passionate about. I strongly support and advocate for equal rights.
By practicing these values, we make a society where everyone can reach their potential and celebrate our differences and successes.
For those who are just starting their journey, here’s what I’d say:
Don’t worry about failing ever! It’s okay to make mistakes; everyone does, but always stay true to yourself.
Ask for Help, and be bold and vulnerable. Ask for advice from people who have experience in your field, but at the same time, look for a mentor who wants to see you succeed. Someone who is too competitive and contemptuous is not suitable. A good mentor is nonjudgemental and genuinely interested in you as a person. It’s essential to find people who encourage and support you.
Stay curious always, and be open to learning new things.
Be patient. Keep working at it, and you’ll get there.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today, and before we close, maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The books I most enjoyed are from the Author Wayne Dyer. His work has impacted countless individuals seeking personal growth, happiness, and spiritual enlightenment.
Wayne Dyer’s approach to personal development and spirituality emphasized the power of the mind, the importance of intention, and the ability of individuals to create positive change in their lives. His work continues to be a source of inspiration for those seeking to improve themselves and find meaning in their lives.
Last but not least, one of my favorite quotes is by Mahatma Gandhi: “Be the Change You Wish To See in the World.”
Peace.
