We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Phuong Bui. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Phuong below.
Phuong, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Growing up apart from my parents at a young age, I believe my resilience developed through my ability to navigate challenging situations and overcome obstacles with minimal parental guidance.
At 11 years old, I was sent to live with my aunt in Australia and only saw my parents once a year. During this time, I had to adapt to a new culture and family dynamic while also trying to find my place in the world as a tween and later as a teen. These transitional years allowed me to refine my problem-solving skills and become more independent and self-reliant.
This experience has shaped me into the person I am today, always seeking a path forward despite the challenges and it has taught me the value of perseverance, adaptability, and self-reliance.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a creative small business owner who specializes in making handcrafted goods using a laser, some printers, and my imagination. I find joy in creating unique and personalized pieces that are not only fun but also meaningful and functional.
This part-time hobby turned full-time career is exciting in that every day is an opportunity to bring a new idea to life. On a larger scale, I’m driven to make a difference and positive impact on the world, while on a smaller scale, I love the thought of my products bringing a smile to someone’s face or making their day a little bit brighter.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back at my journey, I think the three most impactful things were perseverance, adaptability, and learning from failure. Perseverance allowed me to keep going despite setbacks and obstacles, adaptability helped me adjust to changing circumstances, and learning from failure taught me valuable lessons that I could apply in the future.
My advice for those just starting out is to embrace the uncomfortable and try new things. Through these uncomfortable experiences, you may find ways to grow by learning from your inevitable mishaps and not giving up when faced with challenges.
Additionally, I would recommend finding a community of like-minded peers for encouragement and support. Entrepreneurship can be lonely at times, but it doesn’t always have to be. Find people who are happy to cheer you on and help pick you up when you stumble.
Lastly, remember to celebrate your wins and progress along the way, no matter how small they may seem.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, my natural instinct is to curl up on the couch with a cozy blanket. But lately, I’ve also been trying to find other healthy coping mechanisms.
Usually, taking a break and giving myself time to recharge is one of the most helpful things to do when I feel overwhelmed. Often, I’ve found myself feeling guilty for not being productive, but my coach once said to me that rest can also be productive because it’s essential for proper functioning. That perspective has truly changed my outlook on rest.
Another thing I’ve learned to do recently is to reach out for support – both professionally and through friends and family. Being able to talk to someone has helped me feel less alone in my struggles and has also helped me to reframe certain perspectives.
