We were lucky to catch up with Ally Paige recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ally, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Pursuing a career as an artist has never come without work. May it be designing a wedding cake that corresponds to the reception or crafting an array of sugar cookies to delight guests at a children’s party, the end product was always the result of hard work, consistency, and discipline.
I was born into a family that highly coveted hard work. Although hard work never comes easily, it is always expected and rewarded. My parents practiced and instilled in me discipline in the way they raised me. Without having personal experience of being a parent yet, I can only imagine the difficulty of such a feat, especially on a consistent basis. I have more respect for them than they are probably aware of, such strength on their part has given my sisters and me an edge that can only come from rigorous training, constant mindfulness, and unconditional love. The level of gratitude that I have for them is difficult to explain with words.
Through their parenting and partnership, they have shown me what can be accomplished, and what is possible with the right mindset and proper work ethic. My mom and dad have always pushed me to be the best versions of ourselves and to never stop improving. They taught me to always put my best effort forward, to never quit, and to always be someone for who progresses even when life is challenging.
I love both of you so much, thank you for everything you’ve sacrificed for my sisters and I to guarantee our success with a never-ending supply of love and support.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions, we had for you?
My name is Ally Paige — curator of the brand — Dane Lady Bake Co. — I am an artist based in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula, and I am proud to represent a community of incredibly talented artists who reside here.
*Soapbox moment — Please support local artists and small businesses as it helps to provide people within your local community to pursue their passions and create for the betterment of humanity.
My art is best described as intuitive and philosophic. I create through personal experience and interpreting the world around me. A lot of my art is therapeutic and helps me process the day-to-day. My creations tell a story that speaks loudly of my emotions while being saturated with my personality.
If you want to learn more about my story, I highly encourage you to check out my canvas rebel article — a link will be provided later in the article.
I am going to continue building a brand and product that aims to make memories and bring happiness to clients. As a small business owner and artist, I pride myself on being able to create custom products for clients to elevate any event.Take my handcrafted sugar cookies, for example, each cookie is hand-decorated and individually customized. I make each creation personally in small batches to ensure quality.
Dane Lady Bake Co. has been in development for the last ten years as I continue to learn my trades, educate myself in the world of business and finance, and consistently work at applying myself to never give up.
As an artist, my job is to create, and creating is something I’m passionate about. Whether it be elaborate wedding cakes, intricately scored sourdough bread or a painting, I am leaving behind a piece of how my soul interprets the world around me.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Along my journey to becoming the artist that I am today, I have made many mistakes, learned many lessons, and have been gifted many amazing opportunities by doing what I love. I am so appreciative and beyond grateful that I have that opportunity.
When recommending, or giving advice to others, who are in the pursuit of a creative endeavor or professional career. I would recommend to them to think of this acronym:
TIME
Time — because it reminds you that time is limited.
TIME stands for:
T- Tenacity reminds you to always be persistent in what you want.
I-Integrity reminds you to always put your best foot forward and act in an ethical manner.
M-Motivation reminds you to always show up no matter the circumstances.
E-Effort reminds you that no one is going to achieve your goals for you other than yourself, get up and do the work.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of improvement in the past 12 months would have to be self-discipline.
Self-discipline is something that has never come easy to me and has been something that I’ve always had to work on. When owning a small business or pursuing an education online, it can be a challenge to stay focused and reach deadlines.
This, in the past, has given me challenges when It comes to fulfilling tasks and reaching goals.
One way I have addressed this challenge is by establishing a routine for myself. Establishing a routine has always been intimidating for me. With help and support from the people I care about most, I have been able to actively work on building a routine for myself that facilitates a healthy dose of discipline. Once established – it’s like any other muscle group, work on it consistently to grow stronger in that area and learn how to maintain and adapt it to your daily life.
A statement that I can encourage myself to live by is “that anything worth doing does not happen overnight”. It’s important to stay focused on goals and be consistent with the application of consistent work.
