We recently connected with Lisa Lofty and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I’ve always wanted to be some type of teacher. One day while in church, the pastor called a few people up to ask what they would like to do. I said that I’d love to start a fitness ministry. So that’s what I did. I ended up getting several fitness certifications and ended up assisting people with making dietary changes and incorporating exercise. I enjoyed the benefits of exercise and taught my clients to do the same. That was 18 years ago. While I still do personal training and teach fitness classes, I now own a huge hiking group. Over the pandemic, since most of us were inside, I decided to find outside spaces to walk and hike. We hike all over Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. Also, I lead an annual girls trip each year (since 2008). It’s grown every year. This past year, I was able to take 96 ladies to St. George Utah for a fitness/wellness retreat.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As of now, I’m focusing on teaching/coaching women on exercise, especially hiking. My brand is LOBO and it stands for Living Our Best Outdoors. We have several hikes and walks each month. Some are for beginners and others are for advanced. I make sure everyone knows how many miles, the terrain, etc. before they agree to attempt on of my weekend excursions.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Skill One would be Patience – Many times we want to jump right into something. I encourage people to take their time to learn the craft.
Skill Two – Consistency – I feel this is important. You can’t do something once per month = you have to find a way to practice your craft, whatever it may be.
Skill Three – Focus – Focus on the goal. Sometimes it’s ok to be selfish if that means taking time for yourself to learn and grow.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents believed in me. My parents had little means but they worked and saved and provided a safe space. They made sure that I had a solid foundation and education but they also allowed me to be creative. I believe it was a great balance.
