We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chloe Homan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chloe, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I used to believe my curls and loud personality were different in a bad way. That’s what the media made us believe as little girls in the 90s/00s. We SHOULD have stick straight hair. We SHOULD be rail thin. We SHOULD look like a carbon copy of everyone else. We SHOULD be quiet. We SHOULD go with the safe option. However, as I’ve grown up and built two successful businesses, I’ve realized these are my MAGIC qualities. They set me apart from the crowd in the best ways!
I’m a little 4’11” powerhouse and the more I step into that in its entirety, the more aligned I am with my goals and the more authentic each step feels. I would recommend with everything you do, give yourself a gut check. We’ve been taught throughout our upbringing to hush that little voice in our gut, but the more you let that voice get louder, the more aligned you will feel in your success.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a misfit curly who turned an insecurity into a 7-figure curly empire. As I learned to love and care for my curls in my early 20s, I would get stopped on the street 24/7 about my curls…what products I used and what techniques I used to style them. So in 2018 I decided to start sharing my tips and tutorials via blogging and Instagram with @frizzandfrillzz. In just 5 years, we’ve amassed a community of over 500k curlfriends around the world helping other women (and some men) fully love and embrace not only their curls, but their entire selves!
With how well I knew my community and their needs, I knew in my heart the world was missing a quality silk hair accessory brand made first and foremost for those of us with curls, coils and waves that would also feel chic and stylish! In November 2021, we launched Curlfriend Collective and it was met with an astounding buy-in from the curly community. Since then, we’ve shipped almost 20,000 silk scrunchies and scarves around the world! Our scrunchies are by far our best seller and our curlfriends have become obsessed! Our 4.9/5 Star rating speaks for itself. We brought our community a scrunchie that doesn’t dent, doesn’t add frizz or give tension headaches while also gliding out of their curls like butter.
We have many new launches coming this holiday season, including a patent pending design we’ve been working on for over a year behind the scenes. We can’t wait to share more about this launch, so make sure you stay up to date on our socials for the first sneak peeks!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First and foremost, you gotta be a little “delulu”…aka delusional. I know this may sound silly, but the more we allow ourselves to think the world is our oyster…that “no” isn’t an answer…that we are capable of anything we put our minds to, the more those types of opportunities will show up in our lives. This means stop telling yourself no before someone else even has the opportunity to tell you no!
The next skill when starting on your entrepreneurial journey that’s helped me more than I can explain is time blocking. If I allow myself to just go where the wind blows me that day, I won’t get nearly as much accomplished. Put on your calendar exactly what and when you want to work on a task. This will help you be more productive with less distractions.
Surround yourself with people who are doing MORE than you. The age old saying of “You are the 5 people you surround yourself with most.” is not only true, it’s pivotal. Those people, many times, have already done what you’re setting out to accomplish. By simply being in the same room as them, you will soak in their mindsets, their business failures and successes and in turn you will start to see those same successes in your own life and business.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
We are currently looking for other businesses who align with our values and customer base to collaborate and/or create custom capsule collections! We’ve found these type of partnerships have been extremely successful from an overall customer reach perspective and it gives our communities something new and exciting to look forward to compared to our our typical internal launches!
