Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Monique Deville. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Monique , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
When I was a young adult, I often felt lost and directionless without a deep interest to motivate me. It was difficult for me to stay motivated and avoid negative self-talk that was common in the generation I grew up in. However, I was able to overcome these feelings of imposter syndrome by embracing a growth mindset.
I shifted my focus to learning from everything I did, and I made sure to always find something to take away from every experience. Embracing this mindset allowed me to overcome self-doubt and improve both personally and professionally. I also began using positive affirmations to myself to reinforce my confidence and help me believe in my abilities.
Overcoming imposter syndrome has been an ongoing journey, but I have learned to embrace new challenges and opportunities and continually strive for personal growth. By doing so, I am able to recognize and acknowledge my accomplishments and feel confident in my abilities.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Monique Deville, the proud owner of Bird Of Paradise Skin Therapy, and a dynamic entrepreneur with a passion for integrative skincare. My belief in the power of natural and advanced beauty treatments has driven my commitment to transforming the lives of my clients through personalized and comprehensive care.
Since a young age, my curiosity and fascination with beauty and wellness have driven me to pursue a formal education in aesthetics. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, I believe there are three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have been most impactful in my growth as a holistic skincare entrepreneur. These are:
1. **Accountability:** Taking responsibility for the growth and success of my business has been crucial. Owning up to both my wins and my mistakes has allowed me to learn and improve continuously. My advice to those starting their journey is to embrace accountability from the start. Recognize that success relies on your own actions and decisions. Learn from failures, adapt, and keep pushing forward.
2. **Adaptability and staying ahead:** The skincare industry is constantly evolving with new techniques, products, and trends. Pivoting and adapting to these changes is critical to staying relevant and meeting the evolving needs of clients. Early on, I learned the importance of staying on top of advancements in skincare and continuously expanding my knowledge. My advice is to invest time in ongoing education, attend workshops, conferences, and stay connected to industry publications and online forums. Embrace a growth mindset and be proactive in seeking out new techniques and practices.
3. **Building a strong network:** Surrounding myself with like-minded individuals and staying connected with the esthetician community has been invaluable for my professional growth. Connecting with other professionals, attending industry events, and fostering relationships have given me opportunities to learn, collaborate, and expand my horizons. My advice is to actively network and build relationships within the field. Join professional associations, participate in online communities, and seek mentorship from experienced estheticians. Building a supportive network will not only provide opportunities for growth but also a community to lean on during challenging times.
In summary, taking accountability, staying ahead of advancements, and building a strong network have been instrumental in my journey. My advice for those starting out is to embrace these qualities and skills. Take ownership of your path, continuously educate yourself, adapt and stay ahead of industry trends, and connect with others who share your passion. By doing so, you will position yourself for success and growth in the holistic skincare industry.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s, I had a unique upbringing that instilled in me important life lessons. Despite my parents working a lot, I was often a latchkey kid and had to learn to survive on my own. However, this experience ended up being a blessing in disguise.
From an early age, my parents taught me the truth about life – that nothing worth having comes easy. They emphasized the importance of hard work, critical thinking, and building something meaningful from the ground up. They made sure I understood that instant gratification rarely leads to long-lasting results and that true success requires dedication and effort.
In today’s fast-paced world, it seems that many young individuals expect everything to come easily and immediately. Perhaps this can be attributed to the instantaneous nature of our society, where we have become accustomed to getting what we want with just a click or a swipe. However, my upbringing has taught me the value of patience.
Patience is a virtue that I believe is often overlooked. It allows us to appreciate the journey and the process of reaching our goals. When things come too easily, we tend to take them for granted and fail to learn valuable lessons along the way. In contrast, by embracing patience, we can develop resilience, perseverance, and the ability to overcome challenges.
Looking back, I am grateful for my upbringing in the 80’s and 90’s, as it taught me the importance of patience and the rewards that come from hard work and critical thinking. It has shaped my work ethic, mindset, and approach to life.
Today, as I navigate my personal and professional life, I prioritize these values. I understand that success is not achieved overnight, but rather through consistent effort and a willingness to learn and grow. I strive to maintain balance in a world that thrives on instant gratification, finding satisfaction in delayed rewards and the lessons learned along the way.
Overall, my upbringing during a time when patience was highly valued has given me a unique perspective and has prepared me to overcome the challenges of today’s fast-paced world. I am dedicated to continuing to embrace patience, hard work, and critical thinking as I pursue personal growth and success.
