We were lucky to catch up with Janelle Martin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Janelle, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My daughter became addicted to drugs in high school. This was something that I would have bet a million dollars and any body parts would never happen to our family. Only it did, and it was terrifying. I sent my daughter to Arizona (she lived in Texas) and she went to an adolescent drug treatment program in Phoenix for 10 months. This required her to drop out of her senior year of high school and dashed pretty much all of the dreams I had for her. She got sober through a 12-step recovery program, and I received the gift of the 12-steps through a parent program. This experience changed our lives, and we will never be the same. We’ve been through a lot of stuff in the past, including her abusive father and my ex-husband, an abusive older brother, being bullied at school and more. We worked hard to mend our relationship and grow it into something we both couldn’t have dreamed it could be.
Today, my daughter is 4 1/2 years sober, 23 years old, and works with me in my private practice. We use a state-of-the-art MicroCurrent neurofeedback system to help people heal naturally from a host of mental health conditions. We also are counselors and certified in Brainspotting to help process trauma. Our purpose is to give back to those who are struggling like we were through healthy ways of healing and living and especially finding recovery.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My business is The Mind Connection. We are a Brain Health Center, focused on healing the brain in a natural, painless and safe way. Our brain controls everything we think and feel, our behaviors, our relationships and more. We believe that mental health = brain health! Our IASIS MicroCurrent Neurofeedback facilitates brain healing by balancing the brain and helping it to function better. We help with all kinds of mental, emotional and physical conditions: anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, addiction, PTSD, headaches/migraines, concussions/TBI, autism, insomnia, memory, chronic fatigue, brain fog, chronic pain, stroke and more. The experience of IASIS is like a spa treatment for the brain–it is pleasant and safe for all ages, including young children. We are most proud of being a proponent of natural ways to support brain and body health. We help our clients avoid and/or reduce/eliminate medications and learn to support their bodies in a way that does not damage their brain. In addition to MCN, we offer organic, non-toxic products to support the body and brain that address hormone balancing, sleep, immune support, gut health, body and hair care, skin conditions, adrenal fatigue and more. Exposing our bodies to toxic chemicals in our every day products affects our brain negatively and we are on a mission to help our clients avoid this!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Faith in God Thirst for learning and knowledge outside of mainstream ideas
Desire to be of service to others
My best advice to others is to never feel like you’ve reached the end or that you know everything you can know about a subject. Maintain humility and constantly strive to learn and know more, whether that is simply different perspectives or going back to school. Use your own personal experiences, especially the really difficult ones, to relate to others and be curious about their experiences. Discover new ways of doing things. Laugh every single day. Most importantly, lean on your faith in tough times, pray for guidance and to fulfill your purpose according to His will.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is one who is looking to be healthy through natural and non-toxic means. Anyone can be our client as every single person can use a well-functioning brain. We strive to educate about the effects medications, drugs, alcohol, foods and every day products have on our brain, body, overall health and quality of life. We help people who want to feel better and are invested in themselves. Kids are some of our favorite clients as well!
Other ideal clients would be those who play sports, such as football and soccer, where brain injuries are common. Our system can help to repair damage and restore better functioning to the brain for anyone who has experienced brain trauma. Also, we help many people who are experiencing depression and anxiety, difficulty focusing, recovering from addictions, and have emotional dysregulation. There isn’t anyone who can’t benefit from having a healthier brain!
