We recently connected with Johnmark Hendrix and have shared our conversation below.
Johnmark, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
It took quite a while. I feel at times that I still battle with it. Ultimately, when I hunkered down and finally started creating more consistently, the work ethic showed and it gave me more pride in what I was making. Im also lucky to lean on some family and a few friends with relative success in the music industry to give me a little slice of reassurance when I need it. I’m so grateful for that.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I tend to create music for every mood I feel in that moment. That also applies to genres. My music is influenced by some of the folks who have expanded their lanes, such as Hozier, Joji, Childish Gambino, Pharrell, etc. Everything is 100% self produced, other than occasional session work with friends.
I’ve just released a new song in late August, titled “I Can Do Bad All By Myself”. It tells the tale of my own struggle with task paralysis, imposter syndrome, and creative blocks. There is much more where that came from in the following months.
I also dabble in film occasionally. I have about 2 or 3 acting credits under my name with some GSU filmmakers. I also assistant directed an upcoming music video for the ATL post hardcore band, Cascadent. Those who know me best remember that I had a year long tenure as the frontman of this band.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Self discipline – writing every day. Even if it’s just a line. Being consistent with this has aided me in showing more consistency in my daily life. No one is gonna do it but you.
2. Working with a Digital Audio Workpace – Learning to use Logic Pro as a musician gave me every capability to record and release my own music, under my terms. There’s so much freedom with tinkering and learning your way around designing sound.
3. Working within your means – no one who is actively following your journey is going to gripe about your ability to finance your operations. Work with what you have. Flip it. Expand over time. Slow motion is better than no motion. Jameis Winston said it best.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Always. The one challenge that has most of my focus right now is getting traction more organically. Over the years , I’ve inadvertently kept myself a secret by not really showcasing all that I have. Thankfully, social media has slowly helped be get back on track with posting new singing videos semi-daily. I do believe that if I keep working and doing this, the right people who want to hear me will hear me. It’s not always about numbers to me. I live and die by engagement. It truly warms my heart to see someone really appreciate the work and show love.
