We were lucky to catch up with Domenick Nati recently and have shared our conversation below.
Domenick, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
As a publicist, one of my responsibilities is to act as a “fame coach”. I often explain to people that fame is much more difficult to manage than money. It is very difficult to navigate growing popularity and the social challenges that come along with it. I specifically coach people on how to handle haters. When an entertainment client of mine doesn’t have haters, I usually know why. They probably aren’t popular enough to have haters and we need to get them to the point of exposure where they are loved but also hated. If you don’t have haters, it could be because people don’t find you relevant enough to form an opinion about you.
Here’s how I handle my haters. I have a show where I interview celebrities and most times I do it live on Instagram. Based on the guest I have had a couple hundred people watching and sometimes over 70,000 people watching. Everyone is welcome to comment during the interview. I got to the point where I would have regular trolls come into the interviews and write comments that would make fun of how I look, my questions, and the irrelevancy of me as a “celebrity”.
One person in particular would write an average of 10 comments per minute and in one interview that averaged to over 500 comments in one show! They were all unique comments and the majority were making fun of me. I can honestly tell you, After a while some of my loving fans were begging me to block him and I told them, “You guys can block him but I’m not going to. I don’t think you guys understand. He’s one of my favorite viewers! I worked on this for years and I’m sincerely flattered that someone finds me important enough to dedicate this much effort to.”
The other viewers didn’t get it. “He’s rude! He’s making fun of you and we don’t like it.” I appreciate their love for me but I thought he was funny and I don’t think he actually hates me, he just wants my attention and honestly, I think his jabs at me were pretty funny. No one trolled me when I had 100 followers and 50 views but now they’re dedicating hours of their life to bother me. I must be pretty important. LOL.
Then one day I put a video on my story of me checking out at a salon. I got a message shortly after. It was from my troll. He said, “Hey man, you can see your whole credit card number on that video.” OMG he was right. I took it down and thanked him! He called me an idiot and we went back to business as usual. See I knew I was right. You don’t hate me. I didn’t do anything to you. You like me. You just want attention. Me too! I get it.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have owned a public relations firm for 17 years. I create and distribute materials to help place my clients in the public eye. Typically I set up TV, radio, podcast, blog, magazine, and news articles that feature my clients and their products and brands. It is a service that is extremely important for growth. Some clients are actors, recording artists, entertainers. athletes, corporations, and businesses. Most of them don’t know where to begin to gain exposure. That’s where I come in with a plan for gaining exposure through various media outlets.
Additionally, I have a show where I interview celebrities. This is mostly just for fun but I also do it because the interviews have been featured on CNN, Forbes, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Good Morning America, FOX News, Entertainment Tonight, E! News, TMZ, People Magazine, and many more. With this exposure of my own show, I can prove to potential clients that I have the contacts to help them gain exposure for their ventures.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I call it “Going APE” Assess. Prepare, and Execute.
Assess is to gather details about what message we need to get across tot the public. What is the headline? What names can we drop? What sets this apart?
Prepare the materials we will need to get this message across to our audience that proves our message is effective, valid, and important.
Execute the distribution of these newly created materials and make sure it gets into the right hands. This step is typically endless. There are always going to be places and people who have not received this information and it is my job to find them and inform them.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The number one obstacle I have always had to overcome is myself. It’s easy to blame others but nine times out of ten, it’s you. That sucks because now you have to make changes. We want to blame others, the universe, or just life itself for not achieving our goals, but the truth is, you just aren’t trying hard enough. People often ask me how to get exposure. How do I go viral? How do I get more views? More followers? My answer is always the same… Activity!
You need more activity. Make your content better. Make more content. Try something new. Who cares if it flops. Learn from it. But the worst thing you can do is nothing!
