Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tia Brumbelow. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tia, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
My source of optimism, hope and joy comes from my faith in God. In these current times there is so much uncertainty around health and the economy. I find that dwelling in a state of fear or having a constant negative state of mind can really contribute poorly to our mental health. My faith gives me hope and something good to look forward to. It helps me see circumstances and the good that can come of it. Not to say I don’t have concerns or days where I worry but I try my best to quickly come back to what gives me hope and that is my faith.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Dex and Bodie is a creative outlet, featuring carefully curated home decor. We source from various fair trade and local companies as a way to fill your home with items you love. We love to provide unique pieces while also helping those here at home in the USA and around the world earn a sustainable living though purchasing quality pieces.
After having our son, Dex, who happened to have been born with a rare Chromosome abnormality, we knew we had to share our story and support our special needs & different abilities community in any way we can. Because of that, we try donate a portion of our sales to various Special needs charities, our local NICU and other causes that are near to our hearts. Through faith and a deep love for home – we hope that you will enjoy your pieces and know that each item has been carefully chosen because we believe that your space should be one that you love – wherever or whoever you are.
I am so excited that Dex and Bodie has been invited back to the Mermade Market in Dana point on May 24-27th! You can shop in person for 4 days and enjoy some family time. This market is special and you’ll love being among some really amazing shops!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that I think were most impactful during my start were, perseverance, faith and the my interest in home. My advice to anyone who is early in your journey is- try not to be afraid to ask questions. I’ve noticed there are some good things about social media, one of them being people’s willingness to share their “how!” There are accounts that give free info and share how to easily get started.
Sometimes it may just take a small push to get started. Start that website, reserve that shop name, grab that Instagram handle. These seemingly small steps can really help some people with the confidence to either start or continue on. Have a clear vision of what you want. I may be showing my age here but I find that writing things down and seeing them on a daily basis really helps with my vision and keeping me on track. Also, there are so many courses out there – many of them free- that can help improve any area there is lack or if you need to a place to start.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
So this question can be pretty loaded for some, including me, but I think one challenge in particular that many small shops are currently facing is, trying to catch up from a super slow holiday season. For me, my only form of in person shopping are pop-ups and they have been slow in comparison to last season. Since I don’t have a large social media following, online sales aren’t as abundant as in person events. But with all of that I come back to the first question and remember who my hope is in and I have faith that even in the dry seasons there is still good to be found and I can still serve even if it’s on a smaller scale.
