We recently connected with Brittani Martin and have shared our conversation below.
Brittani, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
My family and support system helped to develop my confidence and self-esteem. As a child, they encouraged me with affirmations and reassurance. As I grew older, I began to struggle with insecurities having to do with my weight, which started to effect my confidence and self esteem as a teenager. To build my confidence and self-esteem back up, I always referred back to what my family always told me about myself, and I always remembered that “if I don’t think highly of myself, then no one else will.” I started to realize that I needed to have confidence for myself to retrain my negative thoughts about my appearance. I started to pay more attention to things I liked about myself and how I could embrace them as opposed to the things I didn’t like so much. I aslo began to look at those things I didn’t like and identified ways I could change bad eating habits, or fun ways I could incorporate exercise or different places to shop, that would help eliminate my insecurities or help me to see them in a more positive light.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a new high school Algebra teacher and a long-time philanthropist and founder of Build Yourself Up Academy. I am a published author of 1 children’s book, a self-help book, and two poetry books, all available on my personal website and on Amazon.com. I am mainly focused on building up students confidence and self esteem as it relates to navigating life. I want to present them with the tools and materials needed for them to build themselves up. Through my non profit I do this for the community and at my high school, I do this for my students in addition to teaching the lesson.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Understanding what networking means is a very important skill for scaling a business and getting your word and purpose into the world. Organization skills are imperative for planning and planning is an essential part of achieving a goal that you set for yourself. Lastly, I believe consistency and resilience are qualities and areas of knowledge that have helped me gain success in my life and that can help anyone who has a goal or project they are trying to push forward or complete.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My parents believed in me and invested in my dreams.
