Meet Libby Upshaw

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Libby Upshaw. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Libby below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Libby with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I get my work ethic from my dad.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Skinsational Scents is a natural wellness and skincare business. Our uniqueness is that we specialize in products customization for all skin types. We are a Veteran owned and Family Operated since 2002. I am the Senior VP of Operations. We started as a Kiosk business on a college campus in Alabama. Then, we produced and offered the highest quality skincare and self-care products in the market.

We grew with the love and support of the community. Today, we continue with our strong community identity and involvement by giving back to our community. We provide financial assistance and host a number of community outreach events for selected underprivileged Elementary schools in our local community.

We also continue to provide those same excellent natural and organic products and more for men and women. We have recently partnered with Walmart and now our products can be found at Walmart.com and selected stores. We have recently developed a number of new products to include new natural deodorants product lines, armpit detox and acne cleansers, just to name a few.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Starting a small business can be one of the most intimidating endeavors for anyone. Having some basic knowledge across all aspects of business operations can go a long way to making your business flourish, and ultimately turn you into a more well-rounded manager, especially when you do eventually hire staff. When we first started, it was not a smooth road at all. We had several challenges to overcome. But I think having teamwork and collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving skills helps us to master and tackle some of those challenges. My advice for folks who are early in their journey is to be honest with themselves as far their strengths and weaknesses. Then do a quick inventory of their skills and seek a mentor to leverage their skills.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
I believe work ethic was the most impactful thing my parents and my community did for me. My parents taught me to value education and inspire me to work hard regardless how challenging things might get. I grew up in a small town in Alabama and my community supported and gave me an opportunity to be the best version of myself.
