We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kevin Tan-Perkins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Kevin with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I get my work ethic from my family. Product of an immigrant mother and grandma from the Philippines. The strength and courage from them. But also my dad- he’s retired now but still has side hustles for as long as I can remember. And my family in general on both sides are hard working people.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Kevin Tan-Perkins but most call me Kev, Kevo or KTP.
I’m an actor and financial analyst who has a little tennis background.
Oh I also have my MBA and an undergraduate degree in Health Care Administration.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience. Consistency. Manifestation. It’s those bend but don’t break moments that allow the resilience. It’s the mindset from tennis being down a set but you have two more to win the match. It’s the 99% of “no’s” you get from auditions but that 1% feeling when your agent or manager tells you that you booked the role. You have to stay consistent to yourself but learn how to weave through the highs and lows of life. The manifestation comes from positive words that you live by and the people you surround yourself with. I’m always thankful but never surprised when nice things happen because i believed they would, it was just a matter of when.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I’m overwhelmed I often pray and talk to God- that’s just me. That’s who and what I believe in and it gives me great peace to put this out into the universe. I’m also very thankful to have been going to therapy for my mental health for over a year now. That’s a great outlet for me. And I can’t forget my family and friends, my small circle that I confide in for the challenging times but also the celebrations of life. They know who they are!
