Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Teea Goans. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Teea , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I’ve been singing and performing since I was child. I moved to Nashville after college and landed an independent record deal in 2010. I had tried songwriting when I first moved to Nashville, but it wasn’t something I felt confident with. I considered myself an “interpreter” of great music written by other great songwriters. I made four albums and a career by singing cover songs and other writers’ original music. In 2020, during the pandemic, not only did the music industry close, but I also went through major changes on the business side of my career which left me without a record label along with no outlets to perform. It caused me to question everything and start to re-access what I was doing with my life. I was prepared to even leave the music business all together.
In August of 2020, I was driving in my car and I heard God say, “It’s time to write.” My initial reaction was, “No. You’ve got the wrong person. I’ve tried that. I’ve gone on record saying that I’m not a songwriter. No.” I quickly learned when you tell God no, He becomes persistent. And through a series of involuntary events, I ended up meeting Grammy-award winning songwriter, Jim “Moose” Brown. Moose had reached out to me through social media in 2017 and asked if I was interested in writing and I was quick to tell him I was not a songwriter. Flash forward to a few weeks after I’d heard from God and Moose reached out and asked about writing again. This time I fearfully said yes. We met for the first time on August 27, 2020 and we wrote our first song, “Easy”. I lead to my very first-ever, fully original album on my very own independent label that was released in 2021.
The songs that I wrote all steamed from a great deal of lessons and life situations that I was going through at the time. I discovered my purpose when I started performing my own music and telling my own story. I related to audiences in a different way than ever before. I started hearing things like, “This song helped me realize…” or “Your show felt like a therapy session for me” or “I feel better after hearing your story”. My purpose isn’t fame or industry acclaim, I was called to write to help people know that they aren’t alone. It has brought me so much joy and fulfillment.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a singer/songwriter. One of the things I really enjoy about performing is that no show is ever the same. Some shows are just me and my acoustic guitar, some shows are an acoustic trio with instruments, and some have my full band playing behind me. The energy of the audience makes each show unique and interacting with people through my songs and my stories has been very encouraging experience. My latest album, “All Over The Map” is streaming everywhere you get music. It is all my original music and, as the album title states, each song is part of a trip through lessons and life set to a soundtrack for the journey.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Staying true to myself (Don’t conform to standards that don’t match your values)
2. Consistency
3. Learning to face fears with optimism
There’s only one person in the whole world like you, and that’s YOU. Learn the difference between influence and impersonation. You were created for a purpose that only you can fulfill.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
