We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michelle Goodloe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Michelle, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I’ve learned that when imposter syndrome shows up for me, it’s a reminder that I am moving in the right direction. I’m facing something new and unfamiliar, so no wonder I feel like an imposter! I have to remember that I may feel like an imposter, but I’m not — I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a licensed clinical social worker and a published author, and owner of The Essence of Healing LLC and Gmichelle Wellness. I am ab the author of three self-care centered books: Self Explore, Self Restore, The Self Care Investment and I Own My Magic, and offers busy, caring, and exhausted people the opportunity to make self-care a practical part of their lives. One of my favorite parts of what I do is facilitating interactive workshops for non-profit and private organizations who experience challenges with addressing self-care, compassion fatigue and professional burnout.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The 3 most important qualities that have impacted my on this journey have been self-compassion, a willingness to problem-solve and trusting the timing. Learning to release control and set realistic expectations for myself has been incredible helpful on my journey. My advice? Trust your gut when taking steps forward towards the life you want. Whether the steps are big or small, always know that any step you take will move you forward.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
The past 12 months have taught me so much about accepting and asking for help. As a working mom of a toddler, I’ve been learning that my village is there for me and my child. I’ve been learning which tasks to delegate, assessing when I need help and teaching others to help take care my son. This learning process has been instrumental in decreasing my risk of burnout, compassion fatigue and “mom guilt”.
