We caught up with the brilliant and insightful R’kiyah Scott a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
R’kiyah, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from my mother. As a child growing up, I have always admired her for her hard work. Raising myself and my older siblings she and my dad have always taught us to be disciplined and responsible. Observing my mother work in the school system for the past 30 years, I have learned the value of a strong work ethic. Witnessing her journey from a school bus driver to now an area coordinator has taught me the importance of integrity, professionalism, and going above and beyond.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
In 2012, I discovered my passion for photography. Kiy’s Photography was founded in 2017. Since that time, I have worked to build a brand that gives birth to a photography experience that is affordable, and one that brings out the best in every client from infants to elders. My vision has always been to create an environment where families are destined to create lasting memories.
In 2021 I was grateful to write and release my first book entitled “Great Scott, Entrepreneurship As I know It” which debuted as a #1 Bestseller on Amazon in Professional Photography. This book allows readers to take an inside look into business ownership from my point of view. My hope is that the simplistic insight provided in this book will ignite the drive that is required for aspiring entrepreneurs and give veteran entrepreneurs the motivation they need to continue being GREAT!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Having the ability to be personable and build meaningful relationships with people has been the most impactful tool of my journey. I believe networking should not just be a connection for exchanging business information; but rather a relationship that is mutually beneficial. It’s not about what we can “get,” but what we can “gain” together.
Another impactful quality is endurance. As an entrepreneur, building your business requires consistency and discipline. It is not always “pretty” but if your stay the course, it pays off in the end. Keep pushing and stay focused.
Lastly, always posture yourself in a place of learning. Continue to be a student of your craft. Always know that your only competition is you.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
It is important to have someone (perhaps a mentor, friend, or confidant) along your journey to help guide you through life’s challenges. For me, that person is Therese Willis! She has been one of the most impactful inspirations along my journey. Her positive attitude and personality are one to admire. The knowledge that she so graciously pours into me is not to be taken for granted. I would like to thank her for helping me navigate through the uncertainties of life and business. These characteristics have helped me to develop the qualities of a successful person.
