We recently connected with Sabrina Player and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Sabrina with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Growing up in New York I was surrounded by the hustle & bustle vibe. Everyone around me always seemed to move with a purpose. I use to go to work with my Grandmother when school was out and she was always early and she always seemed to be working really hard and how she did her job mattered to her. My mom, was a force in her careers. She seemed to always be the first to do that or the first to do this, etc. She was always receiving promotions and her colleagues and bosses loved her. She always talked to me about how to be in a work environment and how to navigate, communicate and defy the supposed odds. She also taught me how important punctuality, working smart and competing with myself is. Whether it was when I was in school or a job; my Mom would always say, “ do better than you did yesterday”. “Focus on what you’re doing”.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
When my husband died, my friends took me to a painting event to cheer me up. On the way home I realized in the 2 hours that I was there I didn’t think of the pain I was in. I also realized that out of the 82 people in attendance, we were the only people of color. I had been thinking about taking the leap and starting a business. I realized right then that I would start MOSAIC Moon -A Painting Experience on the south side of Atlanta. We started in a brick & mortar and then went mobile. When the pandemic hit, we went virtual. We have been in business for 7 years. I love what we do, because people get happy when they’re painting. Even the most apprehensive customers end up having a great time!
MOSAIC is an acronym for us M-maintaining the O-onus of S-synergy, A-authenticity and I-independence in our C-communities.
Moon – was my husband’s nickname. He was an artist and an educator as well.
We have built our brand on relationships, and a solid foundation. We stand on our great customer service, quality supplies, professionalism, punctuality, great Fun Art and delivering what we promise. We have also launched a Fine Arts department at MOSAIC Moon: “2 Players & Their Paint” which is me & my daughter.
We offer great Fundraisers! We literally give some of our money away. All the customers have to do is gather the painters together and we’ll do the rest. It’s clearly explained on our website. There are no surprises.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I feel that my background in business, my “get it done” mentality and my faith has brought me far.
I took a year while I was still in education to research the painting business. I encourage anyone to do your due diligence before taking the leap. Attend as many events/classes that you can to see how others are already doing it and to learn as much as you can. I would also suggest saving or acquiring a financial cushion for yourself that will support you for at least a year while you’re building your business.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I believe in prayer. When I feel overwhelmed I pray for clarity and for guidance. I also believe in daily meditation, which usually keeps me even keeled. But if I feel overwhelmed or any anxiety, I will do some deep breathing and I may add extra meditation.
