We recently connected with Denise Santos and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Denise with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
There is no other person who taught me more about work ethic than my Mom or as I call her, Mamí. As a child, I observed her persevere through challenges and hardships and all while being a single mother and not knowing the language. My mom, taught me to always look ahead and keep moving forward. That we, no matter where we came from, can achieve anything we set our mind to!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an Actress, Producer, and Founder of Latinas in Media Atlanta & Latinx Filmmakers Atlanta. As an actress, I get to give life to and share beautifully, powerful stories. As the Founder and Producer, I have the opportunity to help build community and produce content that is underrepresented. The merging of the two are my passions and I feel pretty lucky that I get to do all of it surrounded by a community of very talented and passionate changemakers.
Coming up, October 13th, 2023 Latinas in Media Atlanta/Latinx Filmmakers Atlanta is hosting a Comunidad Mixer from 6-1opm. It is a FREE event open to the community. You can RSVP here: bit.ly/3Rk3JcU

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
If you are just coming out of school, embrace the friendships that you gained while in the trenches together. You never know what the future holds and what beautiful things you might be able to create. Even those of us that are no longer in school, there are many friendships that I’ve made now as an adult and we’ve ended up working together on so many projects. This industry can be challenging to navigate on our own and so to have friends that support me as much as I support them. We’ve truly been each others cheerleaders. When one of us wins, we all win.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
As a Latina, I am a part of an underrespresented community. Film and Television programs do not reflect what the world truly looks like, but rather what we are percieved as or the expectation of what we should look like. That is slowly improving, however we still have a long way to go. We have a responsibility as a community to make sure our writers rooms, sets, and what we watch is reflective of the kind of world we want to see. It is my hope that with community groups like Latinas in Media Atlanta, Latinx Filmmakers Atlanta, and so many more will continue to keep us moving forward and inspire the next generation.
