Meet Diane Acuna

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Diane Acuna . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Diane , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
As an entrepreneur in my 30’s I can absolutely say I have a tremendous work ethic. I would be lying though if I said I’ve always been that way. I’m sure at one point or another we’ve all worked a job that we were less than thrilled with or didn’t exactly love. Maybe a job where we felt like the company didn’t exactly care about its employees, only the work that was being done. When you work in that type of environment, you may not care to have the best work ethic or give 110% of yourself to a company that doesn’t appreciate you. You may not feel bad about slacking off or the occasion call out!

As I got older and started my own business my work ethic definitely changed. When you find something you are passionate about and it is your name attached to a product or service, you will strive 110% to ensure things are perfect. You pour your whole heart and soul into building your company into what it needs to be.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Diane Acuna. I have been designing and decorating cakes professionally since 2016 when I launched my home bakery business Acuna’s Custom Cakes. Over the years the business grew and my husband came to work alongside me as the baker to allow me to focus mainly on the decorating. In July of 2022, we said goodbye to our in home cake studio and made the leap to a commercial retail bakery space which we named Acuna’s Cake Shoppe.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Definitely 3 of the most important qualities or skills of a business owner who works a lot with the public is going to be communication, patience, and kindness. You have to know how to listen to your clients and understand their needs. Even if you’re having a bad day, you need to be patient and kind. You always want them to feel welcome and appreciated.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
As a small business owner there are many times when I feel overwhelmed. At times there can be too much work, other times not enough. Life in general can be stressful and the responsibilities of a small business owner can be a heavy weight to carry. When things become very overwhelming, I just have to slow down sometimes and take a deep breath, reflect on where I am, where I’ve been, where I see myself going. I’ll often pray that God would just give me peace of mind and the strength to keep going.
