Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Adrian Mayse. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Adrian, so great to have you sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our readers and so let’s jump right into one of our favorite topics – empathy. We think a lack of empathy is at the heart of so many issues the world is struggling with and so our hope is to contribute to an environment that fosters the development of empathy. Along those lines, we’d love to hear your thoughts around where your empathy comes from?
As a gay black man from the south, I learned early to truly follow the golden rule, “treat everyone as I would want to be treated.” For me, that is the basic human principle. We all have experiences that have shaped us into the individuals that we are. We should be able to recognize and give grace to people who may be having a bad day, or even a rough time in their lives.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the Dean and Professor of Accounting in the Division of Business Administration at Talladega College. Also, I am the CEO and founder of A. L. Mayse, LLC and the author of “When I Grow Up I Want To Be… An Accountant” and ” When I Grow Up I Want To Be An Accountant, Too!”. I have been featured in Clarion Ledger and the Commercial Appeal for my opinion piece on the importance of diversity and inclusion by providing awareness that we can’t break through barriers and leave others behind. I have a passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace, classroom and the world.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Empathy, consistency and fairness. I always ask people when a situation arises or even when doing their day to day job, how would you want your parent(s), children or yourself to be treated, helped, etc.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I would definitely say my spiritual connection to a greater power which is God for me. The love and support of my husband and the presence of our dog, Guy. The respect and love of my family and friends. And having great therapists.
