Meet Sandra Porter

We were lucky to catch up with Sandra Porter recently and have shared our conversation below.

Sandra, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I understand how challenging it can be to be the only one in the room who looks like me. However, by being the only one in the room, clearly implies that I’ve made it to the room. With this platform, I am able to speak for those who cannot find their voices and expand on the knowledge I have. I’ve learned to navigate those situations by embracing my uniqueness and focusing on my skills and abilities. By staying confident, proactive, and true to myself, I’ve been able to be effective and successful in those environments. It’s about breaking barriers, inspiring others, and making a positive impact.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, I believe the three most impactful qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge in my journey have been creativity, adaptability, and perseverance. My advice for those early in their journey is to embrace your creativity by thinking outside the box and exploring new ideas. Be adaptable and open to change, as the journey may not always go as planned. And most importantly, persevere through challenges and setbacks, as they are opportunities for growth and learning. Keep pushing forward and never give up on your dreams!

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I like to take a step back and prioritize my tasks. I find it helpful to make a to-do list and break down big tasks into smaller, more manageable ones. Taking short breaks to relax and recharge also helps me regain focus. It’s important to remember to ask for support when needed and not be afraid to delegate tasks. And most importantly, practicing self-care by engaging in activities that bring joy and reduce stress can make a big difference. Remember, you got this!
