We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shane McCormick. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shane below.
Shane, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I always knew from a young age that I was creative. However, throughout my entire life, society told me that there was no viable way to lead my life – that I would end up broke, hungry, and unable to support myself. For the most part, society was right. However, society never accounted for happiness. We exist in a society that demands we work ourselves into an early grave, leaving us with no time to find real purpose. It took me many years to feel that I had a purpose. I never truly saw myself as an artist, but rather as a historian, capturing people’s lives through my lens. It took numerous years to become comfortable with the title “artist”. Once I began embracing that artistic side and letting go of my ingrained ideals, success started to come more frequently, reaffirming my sense of purpose. I may still not have the means to afford expensive new camera gear or indulge in luxurious expenses, but I am free.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am currently the photographer for Bishop Cider and Wild Acre. I work with a small number of amazing creatives on the marketing team and couldn’t be happier.. I am also a tour photographer for Marc Rebillet.
This year, I took a salaried position with Bishop Cider on the marketing team and stepped away from freelance work. Marc had put a hiatus on touring and I had recently been working for a company called The Match Artist, which specialized in upscale luxury dating profile photography. While the pay was amazing and traveling is one of my favorite things to do, I had to travel to a new city almost every day. I had also been traveling non stop for about a year and a half. So, I looked for something more localized.
Additionally, I released my first coffee table book this year. It covers the First Dose Tour with Marc Rebillet, which was one of the first major tours after Covid.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Problem solving. Perfection.
Compassion.
You have to just step out of your comfort zone and take the leap. There is no teacher like experience and if you’re able to look at what you did wrong and learn from it, you will be 10 steps ahead of your competition.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always looking for other creatives to collaborate with! Models, hair and makeup, art directors and producers. Really anyone who wants to create cool and interesting ideas. If anyone ever wants to contact me, they can do so through my Website www.shanemccormickphoto.com or my Instagram @portrait_god
