Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tequia Lester . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tequia , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose by doing what makes me happy. It’s important to not chase the money but to allow your gifts to open up doors for you. Everyone has been created for a specific purpose that is meant to edify others in life. We all have a divine assignment. The hammer was not designed to operate how the screw driver was meant to be used. Both are needed when building a house. When you walk in your purpose it will feel right. That doesn’t mean it will be easy but it will fit in the world and it will make sense. Finding my purpose wasn’t easy. I had to self reflect and take time to see what I truly enjoyed doing regardless of the money. I love to decorate and I love to entertain. Bringing people together through beauty and a good time makes me happy. Being a part of someone’s most intimate celebration makes me happy. I found purpose when I understood that my passion was to create moments in time for people that will forever be locked in their hearts.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a full service event planner and owner of a Mobile Hibachi Company. I began my event planning journey over 20 years ago. After getting laid off from corporate America and having no idea what was next I turned over the event planning leaf. I threw my daughter a elaborate birthday party. To my surprise the feedback from friends in attendance was very positive. A friend suggested that I look in this as a career. I began hosting spa parties for kids then expanded to kids parties as a whole. I loved the party business and decided to take it a step further and offer full service events to include adult celebrations. After a repeat client asked me to decorate her wedding, I then added weddings to my list. I planned parties and weddings for over 20 years. Then Covid hit and everything came to a standstill. After Covid a client asked for hibachi in the backyard. I brought the hibachi experience out with all the bells and whistles. Hibachi became an overnight sensation with clients loving the idea of us bringing the restaurant to them. The best part about Mobile Hibachi Atlanta is that it’s an intimate setting that takes place in the comfort of the clients home. They can add on entertainment, relax, not have to wait in long lines and can let their hair down being comfortable in their own setting while enjoying watching their food be prepared right in front of them. They love the experience because each experience is custom fit for them and their guest. We do travel and the cool part is we get to meet some amazing people. Whatever better than great food in a great atmosphere with the people you love.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Always be willing to learn. Reading is fundamental in developing your brand. Study the greats and allow them to be inspiration. My greatest 3 qualities are great communication, being a people person, my attention to detail and my ability to build people up. I love helping people to be the best version of themselves. My suggestion to people early in their journey is to study what ever area they want to be great in. Find a mentor, watch podcast and videos on YouTube. Set goals and set milestones to achieve those goals. Understand that the more work you put in the more likely you are to accomplish each goal. Also, ask questions and ask for help. Knowledge is power.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I feel like you can go all in on your strengths but also there is always room for improvement and growth. We evolve everyday. Life is a book and we are always writing the next chapter. If you only focus on your strengths then other areas will lack. Yes improve yourself daily but also find other people to compliment you. The journey will require help. A team. You can’t be great alone. No matter how strong or great you are. Michael Jordan could not have been the goat if it wasn’t for Scottie Pippen and his team assisting him. When you understand your strengths and your weaknesses you can grow by learning but more importantly by allowing others to get in the game with you.
