Meet Shatora Adrell

We were lucky to catch up with Shatora Adrell recently and have shared our conversation below.

Shatora, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
The question about overcoming imposter syndrome is indeed an important one, and I appreciate the opportunity to share my perspective on it. In all honesty, I haven’t completely overcome imposter syndrome; it still creeps in from time to time. However, what has helped me navigate through those moments is prayer and self-reflection. I believe it’s crucial to identify the roots of these feelings and confront them.

One major trigger for me has been social media, where it’s easy to compare ourselves to others’ seemingly perfect lives and successes. But I’ve come to realize that what people post is often a curated version of their reality. It’s just a fleeting snapshot of their journey, not the whole story.

Stepping away from social media at times and focusing on my own path has been a helpful strategy. I remind myself that I’m exactly where I need to be in my journey, and it’s okay to take things one step at a time. Learning, growing, and exploring during these moments has been invaluable. Ultimately, my faith in God has been my anchor, reminding me to keep my eyes on Him and not be consumed by the expectations or perceptions of others. It’s an ongoing process, but with each step, I’m learning to overcome imposter syndrome and embrace my unique path. I hope that by sharing this, it can help someone else on their journey as well.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As a Fashion Stylist and Fashion Designer, my passion lies in the art of creating unforgettable moments through clothing. My journey in this industry has been an exhilarating ride, with a primary focus on styling individuals for special events such as red carpets, magazine publications, music videos, and more.

What truly ignites my creative spirit and keeps me fueled in this profession is the sheer magic that happens when our vision becomes a reality. It’s the culmination of countless hours of brainstorming, sketching, fabric selection, and meticulous tailoring all coming together in perfect harmony. Witnessing our vision materialize on the red carpet, in glossy publications, or spreading across the internet is an indescribable thrill.

However, beyond the glamour and glitz, what truly resonates with me is the transformation I witness in the individuals I style. There’s something incredibly empowering about fashion. It has the power to not only enhance one’s physical appearance but also to boost their self-esteem. Witnessing the confidence radiate from those I’ve had the privilege of dressing is, without a doubt, the most rewarding aspect of my profession. It’s a reminder that fashion isn’t just about looking good; it’s about feeling incredible in your own skin.

In this world of fashion, spontaneity is the name of the game. Events pop up unexpectedly, and hardly anything goes as planned – it’s a bit of an inside joke in the industry! This unpredictability keeps me on my toes, and I’ve learned to thrive in these high-pressure, last-minute scenarios. It’s a testament to the versatility and adaptability that is essential in this field. While meticulous planning is always appreciated, our ability to think on our feet and execute flawlessly in the eleventh hour is what sets us apart.

So, whether it’s a celebrity gracing the red carpet, a model dazzling in a fashion shoot, or anyone seeking to express their unique style, my journey as a Fashion Stylist and Designer is a continuous adventure filled with creativity, confidence, and the joy of bringing visions to life – no matter how last-minute they may be!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, I’ve come to appreciate three qualities and skills that have truly been the cornerstones of my growth as a Fashion Stylist and Fashion Designer: the art of asking questions, the invaluable experience of assisting others, and the courage to allow myself to fail.

Asking questions has been a game-changer in my career. In the ever-evolving world of fashion, curiosity is key. It’s through asking questions that I’ve learned the intricacies of the industry, sought guidance from mentors, and unlocked new perspectives. Each question posed has been a stepping stone to deeper understanding and skill development.

Equally important has been my willingness to assist others. Throughout my journey, I’ve been fortunate to work alongside seasoned professionals who generously shared their knowledge and insights. Being a valuable part of their teams allowed me to absorb wisdom, learn the ropes, and gain hands-on experience. The fashion world is a collaborative space, and the relationships forged through assisting others have been instrumental in my growth.

However, one of the most profound lessons I’ve embraced is the acceptance of failure. In an industry that often emphasizes perfection, it’s crucial to recognize that setbacks are an inherent part of the process. Falling short or making mistakes isn’t a sign of inadequacy but an opportunity to learn and grow. These moments, though uncomfortable at the time, have been the most impactful in shaping my expertise. They’ve taught me resilience, humility, and the importance of perseverance.

To aspiring fashion designers and stylists, I offer this advice: Embrace the journey, and don’t be afraid to fail. Failure is a stepping stone to success, and every setback is a chance to refine your craft. Ask questions relentlessly, seek mentors, and immerse yourself in the rich history of fashion. The fashion industry thrives on fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, and your unique voice is needed. Don’t give up on your dreams, for fashion is a world of endless possibilities waiting for you to explore, create, and make your mark.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Reflecting on my journey and the pivotal role my parents played in shaping it, I can’t help but appreciate the profound impact they’ve had on my life. There are several key lessons and actions they took that stand out as the most impactful.

First and foremost, my parents instilled in me the invaluable lesson of the power of prayer. They taught me that in times of uncertainty, doubt, or difficulty, turning to faith and prayer can be a source of immense strength and solace. Through their guidance, I’ve learned to find comfort and guidance in prayer, and it has been a cornerstone of my resilience in both personal and professional challenges.

Equally significant was their unwavering support for my dreams. Pursuing a career in fashion, a field often seen as unconventional and fraught with uncertainty, was not without its challenges. However, my parents never wavered in their belief in my abilities and the path I had chosen. Their support was not just financial; it was emotional and motivational. They reinforced the idea that I could achieve anything I set my mind to, and this belief became a driving force in my journey.

What sets my parents apart is their refusal to talk me out of my dreams or let me give up when faced with adversity. Instead, they encouraged me to persevere, emphasizing that the path to success is rarely smooth. By not allowing me to retreat to the comfort of home when things got tough, they imparted a vital life lesson: resilience. I learned to confront challenges head-on, adapt to difficult circumstances, and emerge stronger on the other side.

Through their unwavering support, my parents have been my most fervent cheerleaders, guiding me toward my goals and dreams. Their belief in me has fueled my self-confidence and determination to become the person I am today.

In sum, the most impactful things my parents ever did for me extend far beyond mere words or actions. They instilled in me the power of prayer, unwavering belief in my dreams, and the resilience to persevere through adversity. Their support has been an enduring source of strength, and I am eternally grateful for their role in shaping my journey. With their love and guidance, I have not only become who I am today but have also been inspired to continually reach for new heights in pursuit of my dreams.
