We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Moesia Davis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Moesia below.
Moesia, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
There is a difference between earning and deserving. For years, I didn’t think I’d achieved. Imposter syndrome is a thief. It robs you of an opportunity to celebrate and to be celebrated. I would hear people brag on themselves all the time and I would shrink at the thought of it. I had to give myself some grace.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a photographer from Birmingham, Alabama. For the last four years, New Orleans has been home. I specialize in fine art wedding photography and travel. I photograph weddings all over the world, from Colombia to Portugal and Greece. Weddings feed my soul. It’s the most important day of someone’s life. It’s incredible when a couple chooses you to be apart of it! My love for travel has also allowed me to incorporate travel photography into my career. I photograph several Four Seasons and Ritz Carlton properties a year. I also have contracts with several travel companies. Last year, I photographed a 2 week safari excursion in Botswana.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Put your pride aside! 2. Work ethic trumps talent
3. Every field has the option for “continuing the education”. Always keep learning!
Everyone’s journey is different. You have to be willing to work at your craft and continue learning from the best.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
There will be issues and challenges when you’re a business owner. Prioritizing time and knowing which battles to conquer on a given day are some issues I”m dealing with today. I’m a certified control freak. As a creative, it’s extremely difficult to relinquish control. I’m better but it’s still an issue. Also, being your own boss comes with pros and cons. The responsibility can be overwhelming.
