We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jonathan Musick. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jonathan below.
Jonathan , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I have been looked at my entire life. Either by shock of surprise or even made fun of. Over time you get numb by it and you just don’t can’t care what people think of you or their impression of you. I have been made fun of for going to the gym even though that is the place to work on your health, but I have also been encouraged at the gym for making a decision to change my life. At the end of the day no matter what you do someone will think negatively on what you’re doing and someone with think positive on what you are doing. I just do me I don’t care what people think. I CARE WHAT I THINK.
I appreciate the ones that encourage me and motivate me but at the same time this is my life what they say will not change my goal and especially goes for people that hate on me.
It’s just fuel my goal.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
The J Hub Brand/channel is about living life as best as you can. I started The J Hub on all socials media channels to chase my dream and to keep me accountable as well I wanted to tell my story.
When starting this I was in my late 20s and I have already lost my father to heart failure and also my brother from overdosing with fentanyl. At this currently time after losing them I felt like I didn’t live life and didn’t get to experience the world in my 20s, because I was alway working. Before losing them I had a choice to sacrifice college life to help my family who needed money after the stock market crashed in 2008. My family was still in bad financial shape all the way to 2012. After graduating from high school I made a decision to get 3 jobs and work, to help pay for bills and expenses. I became a workaholic.
Also during this time I became infatuated with fitness and the sport of boxing. I fell in love with the sport and workout in general. Even though I was training I gained a lot of weight from bad habits, but still learning the craft of fitness and boxing. I finally had the opportunity to work 1 job and focus on my goals and I lost 155lbs thanks to the support of Herbalife and the friends I made there. It was a short break from my work life after losing my father who was a big reason I was chasing my dreams. I went back to what I knew best and would keep my mind off losing him…WORK. Two Years later my brother passed and I stuffed myself into work even more.
Waking up One day I had realization I haven’t lived life and I haven’t experienced anything and I really don’t know who I am. All I know is I can work and I love boxing and fitness so I started The J Hub channel to go experience life and what the world has to offer. I’m Currently becoming a pro influencer boxer. Traveling and going on adventures.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First: when you start ITS NEVER GOING TO BE PERFECT.
Everyone wants to start “perfectly” from getting they gym or even the day and time like starting Sunday or Monday. They have to have THIS OR THAT before they start. It doesn’t matter if you start on a Thursday night at 11:23pm. JUST START. Then from there all you have to do is your best and then the next day do 1% better and every other day after that 1% better. Before you know it you will be 10 times better then from when you started.
Second: Enjoy what you are doing but also do things you don’t enjoy.
Everyone thinks that it has to be done there way or they have to follow a certain path. At the end of the day if you don’t enjoy doing something you won’t want to follow it. Now that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it if it’s beneficial. Take yoga and strengthen training, imagine a person that does both they would not only be flexible but strong and probably have little to no injuries but majority of the time you will not see someone who strictly weight lifts and practice yoga and vice versa. This doesn’t only go for fitness. I enjoy making video content but I’m not a fan of editing, but I still learned the skills to edit some and still take time to practice.
Third: Do what ever it takes and for how ever long it will take. NEVER GIVE UP
You must have this mind set “No Matter What It Takes I Will Succeed”. No matter the money, time and effort if you enjoy it and want to do it… GO DO IT! and forget everything else. Now that can be easier said then done but I look at life and situation as a math equation. You might be in the worst spot but if you start from the beginning work on the equation little by little you will be able to do it. It might take time you might have to take breaks but as long as that equation is on the chock board and you don’t erase it (quit) then you will solve it.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I feel overwhelmed all the time my mother recently passed in March and I’m the last of the Musick family. Everyday I’m overwhelmed because not only my future is important what about the future of the Musick name. As well everyone want me to lose weight or fight or something else it can be a lot. I have broken down screamed and cried. All I do is whats best for me when I’m overwhelmed. I prefer take time for myself and spend it alone watch anime and with laugh with friends.
Do what’s good for you. You need time away from people do it. You need surrounded yourself with people then do it. If you need to go read a book or pray GO DO IT. Take the time you need and calm your soul no matter what you’re facing it will be there and no matter what the sun will set and rise.
The only thing you can’t do is quit. My boxing coach told me this “I don’t care how slow you go! Just to quit!”
