We caught up with the brilliant and insightful James Hernandez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
James , we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
I would say, my generosity comes from my experience, growing up in the amount of generosity I was showed by my parents myself and my siblings were children of the state in the foster system. We would spend months to years, not knowing where we would stay, or who we will be with, but endless times we would be placed with somebody who would show us the utmost most generosity. We fast forward to when we were adopted, and from the first day we met our new family. We were shown so much generosity from the entire family. We were treated as if we were one of their own. As if we were a part of the bloodline, it wasn’t easy growing up in a new family we would go to different schools every year and every year a certain teacher or coach would show me the generosity of taking the time to talk to me, correct me when they would see me on the wrong path and make sure that I would always do what is right . Going forward as an adult. I promised myself I promised my family that generosity would be one of my core values. It is something that has gotten me through a lot of tough times and its something that I will always be grateful for..
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hello, my name is James Hernandez
I was adopted at the age of five with my three sisters by the wonderful people I call mom and dad today. The world is an always a beautiful place, but that is why I believe there are beautiful people who are placed in the world. The current business I am in is helping homeowners understand how solar can benefit them financially. I understand this is not a business many people like to talk about because a lot of people have this depiction of solar as a scam and in recent times if you dealt with a certain type of person it was set up as a scam. Because of the way I was raised in the amount of people who have always looked out for me and showed me how to be and treat others. it has always been my goal to make sure I give back. So I decided to start something that is called “thrive Thursday”. I make a post on Facebook and I tagged 50 business owners 50 people that I feel deserve to be talked about 50 people I feel can make a difference when it comes to the business and relation aspect of what being a caring person should be. my goal is to make sure everyone succeeds. I want to see every person make it. Coming into the solar business. I wasn’t fully sold on the idea of it, but the more I learn the more I study the more I understood the benefits of what solar really is. I like to tell people I’m not a salesman I prefer to see myself as a teacher. I just want to show people and change their mindset when it comes to solar. It truly is something that is the future and it is something that can definitely benefit the environment. I am not a person that is quick to jump on the cell. I have had mini meetings with homeowners and I have told them I would rather wait 6 to 8 months then build them a system today because I would rather see them save more in the long run then just pocket a check today . I feel like we as people in the business. Sometimes forget why were doing what we do Money has such a hold on us sometimes that we forget that there is other people involved so I run my business where the homeowner comes first. It’s how I was raised and it’s how I I will continue to run my business. I’m super passionate about what i do. I get super excited talking about it anytime it’s brought up. I love to hear people give me reasons why it isn’t a good idea so that I can explain to them how they have been shown wrong and how sometimes it just takes a little bit of explanation for someone to understand..
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Passion is definitely a quality that has helped me jumpstart my business in my career. It keeps you going in the morning. It keeps you going every day. Without passion it’s really hard to have that fire to keep going. One of my favorite skills is I love to talk to people I love to listen I prefer to listen over talking because if we’re always we can never fully understand what is actually wanted or needed so I feel my ability to listen and truly understand and comprehend what the homeowner is gives me the upper hand when it comes to being able to give the homeowner exactly what it is they want. Persistence is another quality. I feel helped me a lot and is still helping me today. If you’re not persistent, then you don’t want your dream bad enough if you kind of want it, you’re not gonna have it you gotta have the persistence to keep fighting for what you want if I were to give somebody who is early in your journey, I will tell them you can’t give up persistence is the key have passion in anything and everything you do. If you’re not passionate in what you’re doing you can’t expect other people to believe in what you’re trying to do if someone is trying to sell me a car and they don’t even seem passionate about the car I’m not gonna want to car it starts with yourself, you have to just keep fighting there is going to be really tough times it’s going to get hard you’re gonna lose some people you’re gonna have people tell you you’re never going to make it but if you have persistence and you have passion you’re gonna make it it’s just a matter of time
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I feel like this question can be answered with one person because I have been blessed with so many people around me that are always helping me and always wanted me to improve and see me succeed. The number one person would be my wife who wakes up every morning and remind me. Why I am doing what I am doing why I chose to go into a business that directly impacts families.. she role plays with me ,she gives me input on what areas I can improve and what she thinks I can change to make myself better. Another person is my friend Mario Victorica . When it comes to inspiration, there is no better person. I look to than Mario. To go from the bottom to going from one of the most recognized people in real estate is truly something I admire every day. I was able to see this man fight for what he loves. I was able to see the passion, the persistence, the dedication of this man for weeks to months to years, some what argue he’s already at the top, but in his eyes, he’s only at the beginning another person that has help me develop my skills and qualities in this business is, my mentor Eric Garcia since the beginning he has shown the passion and love for what he does. He constantly reaches out to me, sends me a text message a phone call or says let’s meet for some coffee so we can talk about how we can make you a better person and how we can help you help other families benefit from this business of solar .
