Meet Stephanie Spears

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stephanie Spears a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Stephanie, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.
I say burnout is a mindset. How you think about things completely shapes your attitude and optimism. I avoid burnout by reminding myself that I love what I do, even when it gets hard or monotonous at times. I like to remind my students there’s always a fresh way to look at things and if you have a goal in mind, you always have something to work toward. Setting goals and having a mindset of constant and never-ending improvement is key in staying motivated and focused.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I own two martial arts studios in Poway. 7 Spears Martial Arts Academy and 7 Spears Jiu Jitsu. I’ve had a passion for martial arts since I was in high school and am excited to see how that passion has evolved into starting my own business. I’m excited about the growth of our schools, students and fantastic team members! We have such an important opportunity to improve students physical and mental health and look forward to serving more of the Poway community this year!

We will be hosting a grand opening party of our new location, 7 Spears Jiu Jitsu, on Saturday, March 4th. We would love for our community members to attend and celebrate with us!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Faith, passion and determination are the top qualities that have carried me through. My faith in God has allowed me to remain strong and resilient through the difficulties of the past few years. Although there were times when my circumstances looked bleak, I knew He had a plan for me. Having a true passion for what I do is what allows me to wake up excited every morning to get to work. With hard work and determination, I’ve succeeded in seeing my dreams become a reality.

I would say I’m still early in my business journey lol! If someone were to ask me for advice it would be to make a plan, know your purpose, and go after your goals with everything you’ve got. Before you do all of that, pray. Prayer has been the most effective part of my business plan!

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The Bible. I read it every morning for wisdom, encouragement and discernment to guide me as a business owner and Christian.
