We were lucky to catch up with King Aiden recently and have shared our conversation below.
King, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
I’d say I have bad mental health. I’d say it may surprise or intrigue a lot of doctors and therapists. Although I have found ways to treat it, I feel now after almost 27 years of my life, I finally found the key. I finally put the puzzles together and just let go. Now, I am a published artist. You can find my music anywhere under King Aiden. I am in the middle of writing the biggest album of my life and my career, it tells my story and how I found my key to life and I’d like to share it with the world to help others out of their depression too
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m the greatest black transman in hip hop right now. I just came out of a deep depression of 26 years. I’m a producer in my music, and I write entirely by myself. I am a published artist under King Aiden and I’m dropping another album. It will be about the key to life, my story, and what I’ve learned every step of the way. I’m not only black and transgender, I’m autistic, survived a religious cult, and suffered physical abuse from ages 4-17. How I conquer my battles in life are I would say, contagious and I’m willing to help anybody through listening to my music on the way. On this journey called life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’d say if you are a creative artist in music or whether you’re a cashier at a gas station, the first skill I had to learn was to feel, feel everything and don’t be afraid. Step 2, if you get get knocked down get back up 10 times harder. Finally, step 3, never let anyone take your power or make you feel not special and live your truth. For folks early in the careers, hard work always pays off in the end so that’s what I do. I write songs and work on my music career everyday. Maybe more people will listen one day, maybe not, but I know what I put out changes people. You’re actions effect the people around you and I feel like self awareness is highly important and making like changes for the better. This is what all has helped me along this journey and if you conquer these it’s how you can improve.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed in this life just relax and take deep breaths and think this is the worst part, which is now the past, let’s focus on the present and future
