We were lucky to catch up with Yolanda Corrales recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Yolanda, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
From my mom. She had a chronic illness for a long period of her life. She was always doing her best, still trying to help their kids as much as possible, hiding her own struggle to alleviate ours, and waking up every morning to do her best even in the worst days. She was an example and inspiration for me.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My principal focus at the moment is to find the kind of projects I would love to work in and the kind of people who are involved in them. Even thought sometimes is difficult for us, as artists, to be able to choose, as clear as it is in my mind as easier will be to get to that goal. I’m a huge fan of independent cinema and in some point how Hollywood was years ago before the streaming, social media, etc.
I’m also creating my own projects and my own team for them. I’m currently seeking writers, producers, directors and talented people to join me. My latest goal is to open my own production company.
Since I’ve moved to LA, I discovered so many possibilities of learning, trying, developing, exploring… and I have to admit that sometimes I feel overwhelmed with all the things I would like to do and try in a daily basis but at the same time I’ve never felt so stimulated. I recently discover the school The Groundlings, and I’m letting loose my comedy and funny side.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Since I have a background as a dancer, I would say that discipline is the principal one. Keeping the curiosity and the enthusiasm for learning are to me also main engines to keep me motivated.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The Power of Now. Every time I feel overwhelmed about the future or nostalgic about the past, I remember to come back to my present moment.
