Hi Definition Of Artistry, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Great question, my resilience comes from a multitude of places. I was a multi-sport athlete growing up and anyone who played sports with great coaches will tell you they pick up on very pivotal life lessons along the way but I’ll say the majority of my resilience came from not having anyone to truly fall back on. I HAD TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN ON MY OWN by betting on myself and trusting my vision. You find out what you’re made of when your back is against the wall and the only way to get out of whatever situation you’re in is to confront it, head-on. I’d rather die on my feet with honor than survive on my back like a coward.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is James Pinkney III aka D.O.A. (Definition Of Artistry) and I’m a recording artist that just so happens to be the founder of the Legacy Over Money brand and record label. I’ve been making music for as long as I can remember but started taking my journey seriously a little of a year and a half ago when I started the brand. I think it’s important that whatever you decide to do in your life, you have a true passion for it and the love that you have for it must be deeper than just the money you obtain from it, which is the foundation of my brand. I currently have an EP out named “Never x Settle” streaming on all platforms and in that project, I dropped a lot of gems that people have seemed to really enjoy, including some artists and celebrities that we all know and love. I’m also getting ready to relaunch my clothing brand Legacy Over Money Clothing here VERY SOON while also working on a new musical project that I guarantee will top my last project. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When I look back at my journey, I believe the three qualities and skills I believe to be the most impactful are knowledge of self (which creates your foundation), desire to want to be great (Never taking no for an answer), & building a team that has bought into your vision and wants the best for you.
I say these things are the most important because when combined you will be able to create something that is bigger than yourself and other people can get behind, which is important when you start talking about building a brand.
The way you work on these is in order, I believe the way you achieve a true knowledge of self is through seeking The Most High and throughout that journey, you will find what the best version of yourself looks like. Also, we’ve all been blessed with an innate gift that you can effortlessly better than others but it’s on you to find and hone that talent.
Hunger and determination can’t be taught in my opinion, you either have it or you don’t but if you’re brave enough to attempt to make your dreams a reality, it is a must. The only difference between the ones that make it and the ones that don’t is they never quit on themselves, regardless of their circumstances.
When it comes to building a team around you, it comes down to being authentic, a man or woman of your word, and building quality relationships with everyone around you. Through time you’ll align with those who share your vision and you’ll build from there. In order to come up you have to stay true to who you are and who you know yourself to be.
