Meet Jessica Fiesta George

We were lucky to catch up with Jessica Fiesta George recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jessica , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic stems from losing my father at such a young age and witnessing my mother work tirelessly to ensure we never felt we lacked anything. My father died suddenly from a heart attack when he was 44 years old. I was still in high school, watching my mother juggle working as a nurse and raising me and my brother. My parents had always wanted to be business owners after my father retired from the United States Navy.

My mother not only worked as a nurse full-time, but she also managed to open a convenience store with a few of her friends. My mom and her partners worked rotating shifts because she was still working full time. She worked to open the store in the morning, worked her normal shift at the doctors office, and then she would go to her store to close it. My mom shed the money she earned to help pay for our college tuition, and later, to assist me as I found myself as a single mother myself, raising my daughter.

Her determination was unwavering. She was an entrepreneur, single-mom and a nurse. Even after she retired from nursing and sold her store, she continued to invest in real estate and teach me how to invest and pursue my passions. I’ve applied what I’ve learned from her to all aspects of my own life and career.

My mother instilled in me a sense of duty to provide for our family, self-discipline to stay focused on the future despite setbacks, and the motivation to remain driven in all of the things I set forth to do.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Some of the qualities that have been impactful to my career journey:

1) Communication – This is essential for success in any aspect of life, but learning to articulate my thoughts clearly, not holding back on something that I don’t agree with, and collaborating with others to ensure that everyone understands my goals or motivations behind anything I set my mind on doing is especially important.

To develop communication skills, one should practice active listening. Don’t talk over others and pay attention to what is being said versus trying to interpret what you believe someone is saying. Learning to tactfully speak your mind and speaking up when you may disagree with someone is important.

2) Adaptability – Everything around us is constantly changing. I have always had to learn to be fluid in my role and adapt to changing circumstances as they come. I think the ability to adapt helps me embrace new challenges and pushes others around me to also look at situations differently and question the status quo.

To develop adaptability, you need to open your mind to possibilities. Not everyone embraces change and tend to stress-out. This leads to burnout and other mental and physical challenges. By recognizing that new ideas or experiences are a good way to learn and grow, one can build resilience. I have found that leaning into your network, practicing stress-management techniques, such as exercise, or finding a hobby or activity you enjoy help.

3) Technical Skills – The world is evolving to include technology in everything we do. The introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI), new apps, software, etc. are being introduced to us daily. I have found that in my career, I need to learn what is trending so I can also stay relevant in my role. Learning technical skills will help in performing our jobs more efficiently and effectively.

To develop technical skills, the internet is a great starting point. You can watch videos online from almost everyone who were just as curious as you were about the topic or product. Many industry leaders have free webinars, online courses and groups. Participate in online events, stay up-to-date with industry trends and what is happening by growing your professional community!

Overall, my advice for folks who are early in their journey is to focus on building a strong foundation in communication, adaptability, and technical skills. By developing these qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge, they can lay the groundwork for a successful and fulfilling professional journey.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
For my podcast, I am looking to grow my audience by delivering content that will help jobseekers and business professionals who are ready to elevate their careers.

I am looking to partner with business leaders who can provide great career advice for my audience. I am also looking to partner with Career Coaches, Leadership Consultants, Entrepreneurs, and other HR Professionals, especially anyone who might be launching a new product or service in the HR, Talent, or Business space.

Any start-up or venture-capital firm looking to scale their talent attraction strategies and seeking a solution that provides scalability and agility as a world-class recruiting process would also be a good collaboration for me!
