We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Casey Willax. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Casey below.
Casey, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Once I figured out how to make money doing the things that I love, going back to working on things I didn’t like was not an option. So although I may not make the most money, making enough money to survive and thrive while doing what I LOVE every day is my motivation. When you have the thought in the back of your head that theres a desk job waiting for you if you ever give up or slack at work, and that there is a million people who would take your place in a heartbeat it’s easier to keep going when you feel lazy! So picking something I love, having gratitude, and appreciation for what I do is where I get my work ethic from. Oh yeah, and from my mom who is a hard a$$ worker!!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a professional snowboarder recently turned avid surfer. I document my life through Youtube videos which makes me somewhat of a filmer/editor as well. I have built a brand/lifestyle/following based around positivity, activity, action sports, stoke, and health by sharing my journey of growth as a professional athlete but also a human with like minded individuals. I give tips and lessons that have helped me along the way, hopefully inspiring other to make the moves in their life that will allow their dreams to come true!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
#1 The ability to thrive in uncomfortable situations. #2 Taking health/fitness serious
#3 The people I surround myself with
Give up those comforts you don’t need when you are starting and young. Save up time and money, work for people for free if your gaining experience.
Make sure you love what you do, so you can bury your head for years in work and actually enjoy what you are doing without getting burnt out.
Surround yourself with people that are like minded and who bring out the best in you/make you feel like your better than you imagined yourself to be.
Take care of yourself physically and mentally from fitness to diet. Don’t let yourself sink into small temporary pleasures at a cost of your energy and well being. Success is NOT monetary, it is every aspect of your life and should be based off how you feel and how happy you are!
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Instilled confidence in me that I can do or be anything I set my mind out to be. As long as I am willing to put in the work. Mentally and physically.
