We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Traci Allen, MSN RN. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Traci below.
Hi Traci, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from knowing I’m helping that mother find a job or helping that homeless gentleman with a wheelchair. Knowing that I’m helping my community motivates me and keeps me going despite the difficulties that comes with running a nonprofit organization.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Bernice’s Room is a local nonprofit, that partners with agencies and other organizations to help clients with the most simple to complex resources we can offer. Some of the services we are out clients are assisting in résumé writing, job assistance, interview readiness which includes brand new clothes, and daily wear for not just a client but family if needed. We also offer HIV support. If we cannot directly help the client, we will find the help. Our goal is to offer a helping hand to whomever needs it.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most important qualities or skills that I needed to run a successful nonprofit was patience, determination, and passion. If you possess those qualities, you can do anything. You can run a successful business, become the President of the United States, or anything that you set your mind to.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents especially my mother, taught me to be kind and helpful to others. I saw my mother break her back, helping others. Countless days and nights I saw her cooking for the church or making clothes for others. I saw my mother do almost anything to help others, and that trait was definitely passed down to me. My parents are both now deceased and I hope I am making them proud.
