We were lucky to catch up with Sabrina Schottenhamel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrina, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Deciding to make the move to step into and develop confidence has been a long journey. One that won’t end because it’s an on going positive challenge to propel me forward each day.
As a child I was held back to repeat the first grade. That gave me an extreme complex and shyness that I carried with me most of my school years. I was afraid to speak up, use my voice, and inquire when I felt lost. In turn, I struggled to keep up in school.
Once I started massage school, I felt I found my place. As I learned there were people just like me, my confidence started to build up. I felt like this was something that flowed instead of something that held me back.
Getting a job as a massage therapist right out of school was a boost in confidence. I was willing to learn and happy to ask for help to improve my skills. I was learning to grow in my professional life as well as my personal life.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I grew up with entrepreneurial parents that always had great ideas for self-employment. I have known I’ve wanted my own business for a long time and I recently found a paper from elementary school that affirmed this. It was titled, “Three things I want when I grow up?” I am happy to say I am living two out of the three now; having my own business and being married to a wonderful man.
I have always loved being creative and using art to express myself. I discovered I had a common theme in my life a few years back.
1) Through the art of dance. Dance gave me the courage to show up and shine when I wasn’t able to use my voice.
2) Creating in art classes in school. I used my hands to mold and discover some God given talents.
3) I became a massage therapist. I continued to express myself with my hands, through the art of touch.
4) Now I am passionate about sharing my messages through the power of my voice; through the art of public speaking.
Currently I’m working on a project designed to empower middle school age students, teaching them how to stand in their quiet power to use their voice when they have an important thought or message to share.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1) Resilience. God gifted me with the struggles in my youth so that today, I am able to use and share my experiences to support others in their journey. If I can help shorten the struggle for young people today, I believe their future will be to pass the torch of empowerment beyond me to help others thrive.
2) Gaining skills of communication and public speaking are a key to growth.
Joining Toastmasters was the best thing I did to help myself gain confidence in speaking up. I’ve been a member 10 years
3) Networking.
Putting myself in rooms where the business owners are looking to give before they receive. I have learned that surrounding myself with like-minded individuals lifts us up to be better in our lives. Work on our whole selves, and not just in business.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My first ideal clients are parents (between the age of 40-45), middle school teachers, principles, and superintendents that have children or teach/lead children in the middle school age range.
I’m looking to connect with these individuals to schedule time that allows the adults to hear my story and experiences (virtual or in-person) and see their child through my story.
That way they can best connect me with the proper youth groups.
My second ideal clients are the youth between the ages of 11-14 in middle school or just before going into high school. They are extremely quiet, shy & introspective. They’re also intelligent in their own unique ways. They have so much insight inside to share but are unsure of themselves & unsure of how to speak up to be heard. They are humble, kind & compassionate towards others.
