We recently connected with Ashley Nicole and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Well, I have to admit sometimes it’s not easy to be creative and create things all the time. I think the best way I keep my creativity alive and flourishing, is by allowing myself to take breaks after I’ve completed a short film. And Music is a big inspiration and influence for making new projects, I don’t think people realize what wonderful stories you can come up with by just hearing music wether it’s classical, Retro, etc.
The Story is there and it just comes to you in a way. And of course films by other great directors helps to..
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m and indie filmmaker hopefully to become a professional in the future, but I’m in no hurry for that. I believe in destiny and that things happen for a reason, What I think is special about what I do is that filmmakers bring stories to life, and can help inspire people to do the same.
I don’t really have a brand if I’m being honest, but if I did have a brand I think it would just to make films that are from the heart and soul, that have meaning and are just enjoyable to watch. I never had a style of filming when I first started, I just found it recently and Inlove with it to be honest.
A couple of new things that have been going on in my life, I’ve been growing as a person especially since I’m an adult. I feel like I’m blooming every day and becoming more confident in myself, and as a filmmaker. I’ve actually released a new short called “Tenderly Yours” which was heavily inspired by the music of Elvis Presley and his Films.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the most important qualities and skills for me were Just going with the flow and letting the story come to you. At first I didn’t know what I was doing since I didn’t know how to use what I had then which was very little, and it still is but I’ve become more resourceful.
My advice for people currently on their own creative journey, is to not force yourself to be creative. Your mind is a wonderful things but it also needs breaks from being creative.
One way people can improve on their skills also is to just let yourself get better with time, I’ve never been to film school, or had a special training in it. I just got better as the years went on.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Definitely would be my filming techniques, before I was repetitive and that really would just make me feel bored and burn out some days if I’m being honest. I feel like as soon as I found a technique and style that suited me best, that’s when I noticed how much I was flourishing as a filmmaker.
And I hope to continue down that path.
