We were lucky to catch up with From Birth To Death Devin John & Brandon Lee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi From Birth To Death, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
From an early age, both of us shared a passion for music. Even more so, both of us had several family members who were musicians, sharing their knowledge and skills, guiding us in the art of playing our instruments. We both knew we wanted to be musicians since we were very young.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
From Birth To Death is a heavy metal duo consisting of Devin John and Brandon Lee, out of Bay City, MI. Combining elements of heavy, thrash, and groove metal, they are able to bring an immense sound that captivates audiences across the metal scene.
Devin and Brandon were long acquainted with one another, and eventually discovered that they were both musicians who shared a passion for metal music. With Devin on drums and Brandon on guitar, the two formed From Birth To Death.
While being strictly a duo wasn’t what they initially envisioned, Devin’s ability to sing and play the drums simultaneously, combined with Brandon’s limitless capability on the guitar, the pair were able to accomplish a unique feat. While opening for well-known acts such as Soulfly, Powerman 5000, Saliva, Flotsam and Jetsam, Hammerfall, and other big names of the metal genre, despite only being a two-piece band, the duo succeed in bringing out a full sound and putting on exciting and energetic shows, showing that From Birth To Death was truly an extraordinarily talented act.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Dedication and to your instrument and your craft: Discipline. Without this, it’s hard to be successful in anything, let alone music.
2. Willingness to expand your knowledge: Step out of your comfort zone.
This can be a helpful trait to have for anyone in general, and was especially important to us given that we are a two-piece band. We had to learn how to do more than just what we were already familiar with, and things we were used to other people usually doing in a full band.
3. Finding your purpose: Passion.
As we explained earlier, we shared a passion for music from an early age, and therefore, we were fortunate enough to know what our purpose was since we were young. If you don’t have a true passion for something, that something is likely not your “purpose.” If you want to be successful in something that takes as much sacrifice as music does, you will need to have a true passion for it.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
For the both of us, our parents introduced us to the music we know and love today, which eventually got us started on this journey, and Devin’s dad is a drummer who initially taught him how to play the drums too.
