Meet Darrell Wallace

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Darrell Wallace. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Darrell below.

Hi Darrell, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
They say you don’t choose music, music chooses you. I started singing as soon as I could talk and I haven’t stopped since. I learned to play guitar on a balsa wood guitar with nylon strings at the age of 13. I did not get my first real guitar until I was 16 which I still have today. So, it was a foregone conclusion that I would end up in the music industry, just didn’t know what form it would take.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Darrell is a ten time award nominee and an international award winning singer songwriter from East Tennessee. His dynamic style engages audiences where ever he plays. He is a member of the International Singer Songwriters’ Association and the Tennessee Songwriters’ Association. After meandering through a couple of states and several cities, he headed to Nashville. He found himself as one of the up and coming writers with numerous appearances at the Bluebird Cafe. Nashville never found a niche for Darrell’s eclectic style. However, in 2023 he was awarded Musician of The Year by Fairplay Country Music Awards and in July of the same year, Darrell had his first #1 co-write for the song Hope Wins (Independent Music Chart). Darrell’s early musical influences were Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steve Earle and all of the Out Law Country folks, Waylon, Willie, etc. Today he is living the dream (the life of a rock star), playing venues throughout the south, parts of the north and Europe!! His music is mixed with sounds of Folk, Americana and Country Rock(ish). He currently lives in Spring City, TN writing songs, playing music and loving life on the lake with his amazing wife!!!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The qualities I believe are most important in the music industry are dedication, you have to be 100% all in. You always have to be improving and pushing your self to be better. I critique every song of every set for every show looking to make the show even better. Finally, you must always continue to learn whether learning from other artists and performers or practicing your craft to be the best you can be.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
I believe the biggest challenge, not only for myself but other independent musicians, is being able to get our music out and tap into larger audiences.  With Spotify releasing 50,000 new songs everyday, and that’s only one streaming site, it makes it extremely difficult for us independent musicians to stand out. It also makes it more difficult for our audience to find us.  As a result, we have to rely on all of the social media sites to get our names out there. So, I am extremely appreciative to have this opportunity to be exposed to a wider audience.  Once again, thank you so much, what you do means so much to us independent artists.
