Meet Tomell Brown

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tomell Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tomell below.

Tomell, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
As early as 2 years old, per my mother, Delilah Pam, I have been singing. At the age of 9. My poem writing turned into songwriting, and that’s when I wrote my first song. I discovered I had a unique gift after singing a solo in church at age 5. As I was singing, many people were moved to tears, leaving the church congregation astounded, standing on their feet and applauding. That performance sparked invitations for me to sing at churches, talent shows, and other events locally in my hometown of Syracuse, New York. That trend of encore performances sparked my purpose and I continue to use my voice and words to make people feel good or happy. I believe God gave me a special gift to sing and write songs. Also, as an Elder in the Church of God in Christ, I believe a huge part of my purpose is to motivate others to establish a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and for people to feel a dose of love, hope and peace as they journey through life while listening to my songs, music, and sermons.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I graduated from Morris Brown College with a degree in Sociology, and as the Chaplin of Student Support Services I received 2 Performing Arts Awards in consecutive years for being an integral part in helping other students achieve academic success. As my popularity grew, I began singing at the Morris Brown campus talents shows, church events, and honor services. The notoriety and success helped me develop more fans and it inspired me to start my own independent Record Label, Fruit Bearer Recordings, in 1998. I released a full music album, named “Soul Winner” in 2002 and it’s available on all of the major music streaming sites. My latest single released in 2022, called “It’s All About You” is also available on those streaming platforms.

I am the Owner/CEO of Tomell Brown LLC which promotes a variety of musical services, such as music recording, and publishing through Tomell Mondane Music/ASCAP. I am the Founder of the popular Facebook Group, “Single, Saved, With No Kids” which is helping singles live their best lives. I’m the Founder of Fruit Bearer Ministries. I have been preaching for over 25 years and positively affecting the lives of people every day. I’m also a Podcaster and have live discussions over social media about love, relationships, spirituality, and health.

Most recently, I have become an Author. I am releasing a new book named “How To Get Over A Break-Up.” The purpose of this book is to help men and women, ages 21-50 overcome, survive, and thrive after a break-up. Including my thoughts about love, sex, and romantic relationships from a Christian male perspective. I also share what I went through and experienced during my break-up; and how I eventually was able to overcome it, recover, and flourish after my romantic relationship was over. So please look out for it in December 2023! You can purchase the book on my website: www.tomellbrown.com.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The 3 qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey were: 1. Perseverance-There will be people who will doubt your skills and abilities to be successful, They will tell you that “it can’t be done” or “you don’t have enough resources to make it.” Despite their negative views and outlook, you have to follow your dreams. Fight through adversity, because obstacles will come, and never give up! It’s going to take perseverance to achieve and accomplish your goals.
2, Wisdom-Seek and follow the advice of those who have experience in the field, skill, or industry you are trying to be a part of or get into. There is a scripture in the Bible in Proverbs 11:14 (NKJV) that says, “Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” Find some trustworthy individuals who will help guide you to the resources and people you need to make your dreams come true.
3. Humbleness-having or showing a modest or low estimate of your own importance is key. When you understand that you don’t know everything and are teachable, people will be more inclined to help you and support you. No matter how many people liked my singing, preaching, or were impressed by something I did or said, I stayed level-headed. When compliments were given, I’ve always replied with a “thank you” and never got full of myself. This character quality has opened up many opportunities for me.

The most integral and most impactful person in my life has been God. Through prayer, and reading God’s Word He has matured me, and helped me to become a better person. I believe God has been my guide, source of strength, and help during difficult times. Also, my Mother, Delilah Pam, has been a loving, encouraging, and supportive person in my life, along with my brothers, sisters, and other family members. Most recently in April of 2023, I married Delisha Easley Brown. My wife also shows that she believes in me. She motivates me to achieve great success! She has supported me, encouraged me, and has given me genuine love and friendship! She means a lot to me and has helped me in a variety of different areas.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The most impactful person in my life has been God. In 2004, I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. It was a life-threatening surgery that I had to have on my throat. After surgery, when I first started talking again, I could only talk in whispers and my voice was very weak. I even tried to sing, and sounded like a frog lol, which really saddened me because I couldn’t sing anymore. It wasn’t funny then, but now I can laugh about it lol. Through many tough days and tears, I slowly began to get better. After about 6 months, God healed me of Thyroid Cancer, and restored my voice! I didn’t even have to go through Chemotherapy! God is good!

As a single parent, my mother, Delilah Pam, brought us up in the church. She taught us good morals. She’s a strong black woman and has persevered through many trials and tribulations in her life. She made a few mistakes along the way, but has been a great parent. She has been there for me all my life and I appreciate her.

Don’t wait for anybody to recognize that you are great! You are great because God made you great! You were fearfully and wonderfully made! Walk in your greatness with humility! Let your attitude, behavior, and actions show it! I carry myself with confidence and swag because I’m connected with an amazing God and with His help, I can accomplish great things! Go and be great!
