Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Molly Sue Garbo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Molly Sue , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
This is not easy! Especially because it seems we are prone to try and be anyone but ourselves at times in talented environments. Might be a form of flattery, or lacking the knowledge of just how cool it is to be YOU! But i found a way to lighten the load in situations like that. And here is the secret… I have learned to champion the differences! Thats what makes us beautiful, and purposeful. We all have certain talents, quirks, and gifts that no one else has. So i celebrate mine (as i discover them) and i celebrate yours! Being around so many creatives, vendors, and entrepreneurs in the business of making memories for other people , its sweet when you realize our different talents make up a puzzle that lasts those clients a lifetime. We all have a part in it! Starting with that mindset in any setting opens me up for success every time. Because people might forget what you said or did but they wont forget how you made them feel!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Molly Sue, i am newly 28 years old and have been a photographer for 6 years! This photography journey started back in 2017 with my moms old canon. I swear that thing could be thrown down the stairs, accidentally put in the dryer or given to a pup as a chew toy and it would still be kickin. What a brick. They were just made different back then yall! After successfully snatching it from my moms office, i would take that camera, with no idea how to use it, and force my best friend to dress up and be my model! After a little while i realized i was not using that canon to its full potential. I started noticing lighting, angles, focus, shutter speed… and well, you get the picture 😉
Fast forward about a year and i was buying that same canon just a little newer and a little less loved on! Going manual was the goal. After countless youtube videos, friends engagement shoots for $20 and lots of trial and error, we welcomed Vine of the Heart Photography on the scene.
Thats how we got here, and i can say it has been the best adventure i could ever dream up. My eye truly see creation differently now! The sun and trees are brighter, more colorful, and are key in taking photos you can actually feel.
I’m still on the adventure, and it gets better every year. Theres not a lot i haven’t dabbled in…. I do quite a bit of,
HS & College Senior Portraits,
Lifestyle/Newborn
Corporate/ Church Events
Proposal/Engagement
Pregnancy Announcement
Studio Headshots/ Branding
And i love to second shoot for wedding photographers when i get the chance.
I absolutely love what i get to do!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. It will take a while to find your style, but you will! Trust the eye God gave you because no one else has it… you will produce magic that people will see and not need to ask who took that. They will know its you from the colors, and the feeling it brings! 2. Be uncomfortable sometimes! No, i don’t mean socially.. i mean creatively! Never say no to new ideas or tricks. You never know how it could expand your work in wonderful ways. You will surprise yourself.
3. Have a list of questions ready to fire off throughout time with your client. The more you learn about them, the better you will be able to bring their personality out in your session! Making them feel welcome to be themselves has the most beautiful results!
Being early on in the journey of photography or any adventure, just understand you have the itch to do it for a reason. I believe in God with my whole heart and thats how i am able to see photography as something bigger than myself. Whatever you’re starting or thinking about starting, know that you were made to be more than capable. I trust that God created all of us with purpose and He isn’t shy in showing us that if we just keep going !
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
I have been working towards getting a studio! Stars haven’t aligned yet, but i’m prayin! My sweet spot is natural light. Parks, gardens, lakes… i love the sun!
During the “lull” seasons such as winter and the hot hot summer, id love to be able to continue studio sessions for holidays and seniors not worried about the weather! Maybe even host workshops for young girls who are interested in photography.
To have my own creative space would be a GAME CHANGER!
One day, people!
