I run a unique fitness club called 55 Fitness – as the name suggests, it is a health club designed to meet the needs of those 55 and up. Life is busy and chaotic, to me that is an understatement. On top of being the owner and head chef of J’s Sweet Affairs I am also a mother of three. There is a saying out there; learn to take care of your self before taking care of others and the same goes for working effectively. I made a promise to myself and it isn’t always easy to keep it, but 5 days a week I spend 20 min – 1 1/2 hours working out. I do yoga, pilates or hiking with a friend. By doing this it is instrumental to my ability to work and take care of my kids. I am more calm, patient, and clear headed. Read more>>

It was a hectic time in my life when I stumbled upon the practice of meditation. I was juggling being a full-time student, a side hustle, and trying to start a career. Constantly on the go, I felt like I was always falling behind. I knew I needed to do something to take care of myself, but I didn’t know where to start. Read more>>

As a multi-hyphenate artist, it has been a special and sacred experience discovering the beauty in using my many ‘hats’ simultaneously. That said, I am an actress, filmmaker, and community development consultant. As a stage, television, and film actress my privilege has been to breathe life into the visions of reputable brands, such as, Cricket Wireless, Crackle, TvOne, Adobe, Investigative Discovery, along with exceptionally talented writers/directors that explore the themes of grief, endearment, exploitation, and transgression. As a filmmaker, I gravitate toward producing content in the mediums of documentary, panel discussions/roundtables, along with drama and romance narratives. As a community development consultant that founded two start-ups, my passion to educate and equip others in disinvested communities stems from my own experiences of living in impoverished and wealthy neighborhoods. I pride myself on establishing entities that provide strategy and governmental information that often isn’t considered when strengthening the economic development of a neighborhood and its residents. For self care most times I detach and isolate myself and spend time with me. The real me, not me as an author, wife, mom, business owner just with me, the person I am at the core aside from any title I attached myself too. It may be a weekend or a full day it really depends on what I feel my soul and spirit needs at the time and I fill those days with things that bring me fulfillment. Self care for me is also releasing fear so I might use that time to do something I really want to do but some type of fear has me on the fence, rather it’s fear of not doing it right, or doing it alone, I make a conscious decision to overcome limitations that stop me from doing things I want to do. “Self-care” is an interesting concept these days. Depending on who you ask, and via what medium, it could mean anything from microneedling to energy healing, or the latest Instagram remedy for bad eyebrows. But whatever your definition, particularly in a culture saturated with “how-to’s” and “5-rules,” it has never been more essential to clarify what self-care means to you. For me, it’s changed as I’ve gotten older. It’s become deeper and more considered; less about body, more about soul, and all about finding balance between the two. Read more>>

Self care is an important factor for how I function in my personal and career life. I multitask on my day to day and definitely spending time to debrief on my day it helps me to prepare for the next day. A few of the activities that are always good as an entrepreneur and that I practice are to pause, prepare and act. I used these three as follow, I pause by spending time alone, either at a workout class, or booking a hotel or doing an activity that would help me to recharge again. I prepare my goals, these can either be for a day, week, month or even for your whole year. I act, I activate the energy that I gain while pausing, and the prepare that I prepare to achieve my goals. I don’t know if I’m supposed to be this candid, but I say “no” more. I decline projects or invitations that over extend me, or take my energy without nourishing it. I’m that crazy plant/dog lady whose house is bouncing with boxers and covered in (some of them a lil thirsty right now) plants. The dogs always make me smile, and the plants are comforting. Our fairy lights and LED candles are on a timer, so at night our house is very quiet and calm. Read more>>

I think self-care is the hardest thing to make a priority, especially when you work full time, parent, are sleep-deprived (hello, parents!) and carry a heavy mental load. I have an 18 month old and I’m breastfeeding so most of my energy goes to taking care of her, literally, calorically and otherwise! Self-care can often feel selfish because there are a million other things you could be doing and other seemingly more important things to cross off an ever-growing to-do list. What I know to be true though, is it is literally impossible to continue moving forward if I’m not taking care of myself. I cannot be all the things I want to be to those I love or accomplish the goals I have for myself when I am running on empty. Read more>>

After adjusting to life in a post-pandemic society, it became abundantly clear that self-care needed to get prioritized in my life. Like so many others, I found myself struggling with my mental health and work/life balance more than ever. I felt as though I was pouring from an empty cup as I dragged my feet through the halls at work day after day with a preoccupied mind. Tension in my body had risen, my anxiety-ridden heart was always racing, and enough tears had flowed from my eyes to water a garden. It concerned me how long I stayed down, but eventually enough became enough, and I created a self-care plan for myself to forge ahead. I welcomed my first pet, a French bulldog puppy named Snoop into my household, subscribed to health and wellness newsletters, read different Psalms daily, started a new journal, began to incorporate Epsom salt into my bath routine, invested in at-home facials and undereye masks, experimented in the kitchen with new recipes, and even changed up my hair color for fun. I became more intentional with my free time in order to properly re-charge. I realized that improving my mindset from within through self-care was difficult to get started, it worth it for my peace of mind and overall productivity. Read more>>

Self-care is so incredibly important, especially in this day in age when it is so easy to be overwhelmed or feel ungrounded. I think the rise of social media and technology affects us, EMFs are a real thing. I notice that when I adhere to the hustle culture and go long periods without rest my brain and body start to rebel. If I don’t make time for myself I have the worst creative blocks, anxiety, stress, and I just start feeling run down. It’s been proven that stress creates a lot of chaos for our mind, body, and spirit. One of the most important lessons I have learned on this journey is that self-care is not selfish, it is necessary. When you run a business you juggle a lot such as personal life, family life, the business, and often many more important components. For me to give the best effort and energy to these areas in my life, I have to make sure I am recharged and ready. Read more>>

For self care I do Vagus Nerve toning/ nervous system nurturing, take brisk walks in nature, Bible study, get plenty of exercise & go out dancing. Consistently engaging in self care has exponentially amplified my effectiveness & my quality of life. Whatever practices one finds that refresh & refuel them, the key really is consistency. And I’d argue that some of what I mentioned above can be swapped out based on personal preferences- aside from attending to the nervous system, which is really non-negotiable. Read more>>

Self care for me looks like being catered to, catered for, done for. There are times when I am reminded to receive, when I am reminded to let someone serve me, when I am reminded to let someone “cater” to me, instead of being the caterer. How ever, there are times when people are scared to cater to me because of my profession in catering. There are other times when I’m denied being catered to because I am the caterer. Read more>>

My version of self care varies depending on the day, haha! Sometimes, my self care consists of booking myself a massage, hair and a nail appointment to reset myself and give myself a little boost before I get back to the grind! I now value starting early and slowly. Read more>>

Self-care is a very important part of my routine and has a huge impact on my effectiveness! Part of my self-care is creating simple boundaries that I stick to in order to maintain balance in my life. For example, on non-wedding weekends, I make a point of keeping Sundays open for personal days, so I schedule all of my meetings during the week or on Saturdays for clients who need to meet on the weekends. Having one protected day to myself makes all of the difference, especially during the busy summer months! I can return to work Monday morning feeling refreshed and able to focus on the tasks I need to complete that week. I also have a strict end time each day, so I check my emails for the last time at 5pm and then log off for the evening. These boundaries are crucial and keep me from getting overworked or exhausted. I have learned the power of my PAUSE! I first discovered how a pause could go a long way in parenting . By stopping to evaluate my reactions and my words to create better relationships. But over the course of the last 2 years; life has taught me that my pause is a lifestyle. As someone who loves to do all the thing and who often is taking care of her family, business, and everyone else- I came to place where I felt depleted. To me, self-care is about paying attention to one’s physical, spiritual, and mental needs in order to maintain overall well-being. As a graduate of a reputable design school and a professional architectural designer, I understand the pressure to excel in my field with endless deadlines. However, just a few months into my career, I found myself burnt out and trapped in a vicious cycle of work without much rest. In the midst of my journey to balance my creativity and sustainability, I was fortunate enough to find a job that focuses on collaboration more than an individual pursuit. In order to perform at a higher level, I needed elements of rest, nourishment, and self-care. They are often overlooked as working nonstop is ironically the easiest path for more production, especially with the mainstream media promoting such path. Read more>>

Self-care is very import in all aspects of life, especially the creative side. What helps me a lot is completely unplugging from the world. I turn on do not disturb and I’ll do things that take me out of everyday thoughts. For example, I like playing video games, going on walks, meditating, listening to podcasts, and a couple of other things. The key is to find something that completely detaches you from the stuff racing through your mind. Then when you come back to reality you feel refreshed and ready to accomplish your goals. As a wife, mother and CEO of my business, self-care has never been in the forefront of my to-do list. It wasn’t seen as a priority, rather a luxury, I didn’t deserve, or take up. For the longest time, I thought spending time on myself was being selfish, and taking time away from my husband or my child. Little did I remember, or realize, how important rest and renewal is within my faith, and how quickly I forgot what an impact it can make on my life, both personally, religiously, and in business. I am a young adult living with chronic illnesses and pain, so the care I am giving my body directly correlates to my ability to engage. The ways I care for my body is constantly flowing, because my body’s needs are ever-changing. Recently, self care has looked like accepting when I need an extra nap, moving my body, and getting regular massages for pain management. In my artistic practice, self care has meant recognizing when I need to take breaks from making (which can be very hard when I’m in the zone!) to stretch and ensure I’m not causing extra pain or burn out. One of the most important decisions I ever made self-care wise was going to massage therapy. This is especially important if you work a lot with your hands a lot. Self-care is so, so important to me and my ability to serve my clients well and not completely lose my mind! I do a few different things for self-care that have made a big difference. One of the most important things I try to do is set aside time for myself each day to do something that brings me joy, that isn’t related to any work or business topics. For example, reading a book or journalling. This is so important so I have time to recharge. Read more>>

As a full-time mompreneur, it is crucial for me to be in my best (physical and mental) state. I want to be the best I can be when serving my clients without sacrificing my duties as a parent and a spouse. It can be hectic and fun, I tell you. But despite that, I make sure I always have time for myself. For me, dedicating a few hours of ME TIME is the recharge I need to always be in my best footing. What I usually do is start my week off by reading the bible with my husband so we can reconnect with our faith and live through the week with His words guiding us. I am also starting to get myself into reading self-help books thanks to my husband’s influence. Other than that, I also dedicate a few hours in a day to simply unwind; do the things I love with the people I love. My go-to thing to do is binge on comedies. I especially love watching (and re-watching) The Office with a cup of hot chocolate and heaps and heaps of whipped cream on top. I also like to go on trips to Starbucks for some matcha and their food! I’m a foodie, you see and food fills my heart as it fills my stomach — though not as much as seeing my husband and daughters. Seeing their faces will always be enough to get me energized and fulfilled and I cannot imagine ending my day without them. I then conclude my week doing my skincare routine which in itself can be very therapeutic and relaxing. And that’s how I feel renewed and eager to start greeting my clients and serving them to the best of my abilities. Read more>>

I take self-care very seriously. My self-care routine looks like starting my day with positive affirmations, yoga, meditation, getting sunshine, prayer, walking, skin care, haircare, showing gratitude, and the most important part of my self-care routine is positive self-talk. For many years I did not take self-care seriously or even know about it. It was as if everyone else was more important than my own well-being, so fast forward now in the last 3-4 years I learned to love myself, and during my self-love journey I noticed how much of a difference self-care helps me to keep my mental health, and overall energy up. It has changed my outlook on life. It makes my work and home life very effective because I schedule into my day, and it helps everything go by much smoother. I make a check list everyday of the ways I want to show myself love, and it really gives me so much joy when I check off the self-care rituals one by one. Read more>>
