We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mary Gonzalez . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mary below.
Mary , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I build this confidence from being in grade school to being a mother. My self-esteem came through, a lot of wise hair artist and a diverse of people. I just started visualizing my highest self.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an owner and hair stylist of The Orange Salon in Deep Ellum. I have started my career in 2008 and took over my business in 2015, as an assistant and worked my way up. I was very fortunate to work under many talented hairstylist. To create my own technique, build great self esteem and have high confidence. I do color, foil, cuts, blowout styles, and treatments. Give consultations, formulate, mix too much/2 little and create a vision. Learning new material as I get older looks scary but becomes a great adventure in my chair. As a Latin woman owner I get to experience the ups and downs, highs and lows of owning a business. I carry my brand with pride! It’s my home away from home! The struggles of COVID made me stronger to achieve anything that comes my way. I love what I do! Seeing my clients and new ones with smiles on their faces as they walk out my salon, inspires me to never give up.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I feel like having passion, open communication, being a multitasker and planning helped me build my career. I tell to whom I teach or work in my salon. Never give up on something that you love to do. Always be ready to take on a task; staying neat and organized with your work makes a happy client and a happy boss!
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Being a hairstylist/owner can put you in complicated situations. It’s hard to not mix them together. Playing role separately is an everyday challenge. When it gets overwhelming I have figure out which side does the situation go on. Listening, understanding and being fair! I try not to acted on right away without understanding. Having a business and making sure your lights stay on is the same as having a stylist with product!
